Biography
"He's gone," they told him, after.
After. After he'd awoken in the hospital, his vision still bleary, the sounds of his brother's screams still ringing in his ears. His bandaged head felt heavy, but not half so heavy as his heart.
"He's gone," they told him, on the battlefield.
There, amidst the dead and the dying, as they loaded the wounded warrior onto a wagon. He couldn't see clearly, the fur around one eye swollen and sticky. Even so, he could see that they were wrong.
"He's gone," they said, holding him back.
Holding him back, and keeping him from charging to the aid of his fallen brother. He could barely hear them over his bellows. He could see him, lying there, unmoving, his fur matted with blood and covered in scars. Why wouldn't they let him help him? He wouldn't leave him--
...
"He's gone," they told him.
He wouldn't - couldn't - believe them.
And he would never forgive himself.
