When others in her clan have shifted shapes and grown--or shrunk--into breeds and shapes and colors to suit them better, Ameretat has stayed a Guardian through it all, and shows no sign of changing soon. She has learned to grow in other ways, dabbling with pieces of clothing, admiring the pattern changes she saw in her clanmates...though never taking any for herself. There may come a time when Mere--well matched for the soubriquet given her mothering nature--will stretch her own wings and see what might come of her colors, but for now, she has decided to save the funds on Olympuswatch for the younger dragons.

"Don't you miss it?" Mystral curled at the feet of the guardian, doing her best to make herself smaller than the one she was talking to.

"Miss what?"

"Nesting. I've seen you and Stribog, keeping to yourselves, no genes and common breeds, never nesting anymore."

The older dragon tilted her head. "The Arcanist does not need my children to serve for him, and I fear that with our lair the size it is, that is all I would be able to offer them."

"It's a worthy cause," the young imperial said, but they both could hear the lost battle in Mystral's voice.

"That it is. But I would rather stay here and play mother to all of your little fledglings with Luca than keep any eggs of my own. Perhaps in time."

"You say that a lot."

"Time is something I have been given a great deal of. I learn to make the most of it."

The days at Olympuswatch are fleeting memories, many dragons now a part of the clan who never knew the lands the Arcanist had granted them in the beginning. Now the clan finds a new birth under the watchful eye of the Tidelord, nestled in the Fishspine Reef. But they have not forgotten their mountaintop, nor those who went to serve the gods before. Mere walks with each dragon to the stones of sacrifice, no matter how young or old, no matter how long or short a time they have been with her. The lair is often too full for all the dragons she finds during his trips to the market, and too many nights are spent with her wondering where all the young ones she could not bring home with her will end up.

She remembers her children, offered to the markets in a time of need, before she could even grant them a name...and then the feeling of their spirits being cut short, sent off to Arcanist-only-knew which deity in the heavens.

Five. Five fledglings. Three guardians like her. Two tundra, like Stribog. She sees their eyes every night, and swears again and again that she will never let another child of Olympuswatch go off unnamed. If they go to meet their makers, then the Maker will have a name to call for them. Her heart cannot bear any more lost children.

"What do you think?" The wildclaw came up next to Ameretat, flicking a wingtip toward the newest brood. Half fledglings of their own nests and half children found at the markets, they'd had to put together a hurried bid for a larger lair to ensure everyone had somewhere to sleep that night.

"I think with you and your brood keeping the place running, we're far more industrious than this old guardian could have managed," Mere responded with a soft laugh.

Luca nudged her with his head. "Nonsense. Myst and I are just finding our own way to repay you."
"And your children?" Mere nodded to the two imperial dragons--fully grown in their own right now--tearing off after each other, a few of the newest faes dancing around their heads.

Luca chuckled. "They find their own way to help."

"Indeed. Chaava and Icarus are just as invaluable as you and your mate. I couldn't keep all this going without you."

"Stormcatcher willing, you won't ever need to." He stretched his wings. "I'm going to make sure they're not hurting the new ones."

"Ever watchful, Luca."
"A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts."
