Rieve was always too curious for her own good.

Even as a hatchling, she was always getting into trouble, poking her nose where it didn’t belong, and asking an endless stream of questions. While it was true that all hatchlings had a bit of curiosity about them and all hatchlings asked questions, Rieve never quite seemed to grow out of it.

What? was her first question, like most hatchlings. Day in and day out, the flight elders patiently answered an endless string of what is this and what is that as Rieve learned the names of everything around her, her green eyes taking everything in, afraid to miss even a moment of action.

Who? came next. Now that she knew the names of the things around her, she wanted to know all the names of the dragons in the flight, and all the names of the dragons those dragons knew. She wanted to know all the intricacies of the flight’s relationships--friends, families, rivals, lovers, who was a leader, who was a follower, who was the Windsinger, she wanted to know them all.

Why? was third. Why did the flight live on the Windswept Plateau, why did no one leave, why did no one care about the wide world beyond the edge of the Zephyr Steppes or what lay beyond the Twisting Crescendo?

And one day she got her answer about what lay beyond the edge of the Windswept Plateau. A new flight had come into the Windsinger’s territory, their blue eyes strikingly different from the green eyes she was familiar with. They were a mismatched clan, dragons of all shapes and sizes, led by a strongwilled Fae named Riether, but they all shared the same weary look.

Where? was her question for the newcomers. Where did they come from? Where were they going? And old questions surfaced too: Why were they here? Who was the Tidelord? What were they looking for?

One dragon in particular, an Imperial named Rajani, answered each and every one of her questions with a measured patience, and each answer sparked a million more questions after that. Rajani was patient and kind, and when he shared his knowledge with her, it kindled a fire in his ocean-blue eyes, and she knew that beneath his reserved exterior was a soul seeking knowledge just as fervently as her. She knew that when the time came for Rajani’s flight to leave the Windswept Plateau, she would be sad to see him go.

One day--much sooner than Rieve would have liked--it was finally time for the Failte Flight to leave the Windsinger’s territory and continue their journey to the Southern Icefield, and Rieve had just one question for them:

How do we get there?
