The premise of Funnel's Rage is a the son of a fallen officer and a retired detective, Curtis, leaves the city to escape the judgemental criticism of his father's decisions and the prejudice he saw on a near-daily basis. While cleaning up the home he was born in, he discovers an egg believed to be left behind by one of the gods. With his life in shambles, he nearly leaves the egg behind. But when he felt movement inside the egg, he vows to protect the hatchling inside and declares himself the egg's father. This is one of the only two scenes that sets its location in the city, the rest takes place in the Red Desert and in Funnel's Canyon.

Once Curtis arrives in Funnel's Canyon, having purchased a cabin inside the Canyon from one of the residents in the nearby village, Curtis begins his living as a miner. However, one unexpected afternoon, he is visited by an ex-lover and his fiancé (Thomas and Oliver), who were concerned for him after hearing of his mother's passing. By now, the dragon from the egg he was gifted had hatched into a bouncing baby Rayj, a role filled by Darius. Curtis, shocked by Thomas' and Oliver's sudden arrival, explained to them that they didn't have to check on him- seeing as he had hurt them in the past when his depression was at its worst. Regardless- Thomas and Oliver insisted on staying and helping, Oliver had taken a serious interest in mining.

Since Curtis had been recovering from his previous alcoholism, he'd been controlling his temper and directing it as needed, such as his new fatherly instinct. But he still has withdrawals. At times like these, he spends some extra time in the mines and distances himself from anyone he could potentially hurt, for fear he would endanger someone's life once again. Curtis' greatest fear is to become the monster he once was and losing everything again, this time without anyone to fall back to. It was one of these such ocassions where he meets and rescues Berkley and Pearl, an odd and inseparable pair of brothers.
