Lika || The Imperfect Prophet
"Warrior sole, stuck in the dark. Lika find her matriarch."

___________________________________________________________________________________

Lika was aware that she had come into this clan as the lowest of the low. She got the worst food, the worst sleeping spaces, and pushed around often if she found herself in someone else’s way.

For the most part, though, Lika was ignored. She was grateful for this small mercy. Although the isolation was crushing, she had withstood it for most of her life. Dragons thought her cursed for the pockmarks in her skin that she tried to hide with ragged cloaks, or they thought her insane for the nonsense words she mumbled under her breath without ceasing.

Sometimes, Lika thought she was insane too. She didn’t know why prophecies flitted through her mind and onto her tongue in the form of fragmented riddles. She didn’t know why they always came true. She didn’t know why no one ever believed her.

Since Lika had come to this place, the riddles had increased their frequency. As she went through her day, she found herself muttering things like, “Beware the haunted one, the nothingness comes” or “Mother, mother, not your daughter. Light and fire burns your wounds.”

Were these warnings for her or predictions of someone else’s demise? Lika didn’t know. She was the useless kind of seer.

There was a commotion to her right. Lika drifted with the other crowd of dragons to watch as a green Bogsneak struck down a dragon who had tried to steal from her.

“Pillbug,” Lika reminded herself, but for once she decided not to shrink into the shadows to avoid catching attention. The other dragons around her hooted and placed bets on the outcome of the fight. Lika couldn’t look away.

The Bogsneak’s rigid strength was striking. Yet, she didn’t seem cruel in the way some others here did. She just looked… hard. Impassive. Uncaring.

“Warrior sole, stuck in the dark. Lika find her matriarch.”

Wait. That was her name! The prophecies had said her name!

Lika repeated the phrase to herself over and over. Was this fierce dragon supposed to be someone Lika could follow, someone she could trust? Or was Lika supposed to locate the other dragon’s mother-figure in order to free her from the dark? Not for the first time, Lika wondered why her prophecies couldn’t have come in the form of step-by-step directions.

The Bogsneak smacked her opponent into the dirt a second time and stalked away, giving no care to the commotion behind her. Lika scurried after her, compelled by an urge to follow (whether it was from the prophecies or her own desire she didn’t know).

Sometimes the Bogsneak would glance back in Lika’s direction, but Lika was good at ducking down behind rocks and piles of waste, tucking her face into her wraps to stop her rambling tongue from giving her away. When night fell, Lika curled up as closely as she could to the Bogsneak’s den.

Dragons that the Bogsneak passed called her Elonkorjuu. Lika shaped the name in her mouth. She longed to talk to her or just be near to her, but as thrilling as this dragon was, she was also terrifying. Lika had survived for years due to her anxious nature. She wouldn’t reveal that she had tailed Elonkorjuu, not just yet.

Another prophecy crept into her mind.

“Bogsneak with a heart to hide, find the secret at her side. Trouble’s coming. Trouble’s coming,” Lika murmured anxiously to herself.

For so long, Lika had thought of herself less as a living being and more of a shell for the prophecies to deliver themselves through. But that was before one of them said her name.

Elonkorjuu. Lika was terrible at remembering names -- there were always too many other words filling her head -- but she could remember faces. Now that she knew who Elonkorjuu was, she could try to warn her and save her from whatever danger was coming her way.

Lika refused to let her broken mind take over her completely. She would not be helpless when trouble came.

There wasn’t much Lika could do. But surely trying to help one dragon would be enough. It didn’t matter as much whether she succeeded or failed -- as long as she tried! Satisfied with her plan, Lika curled her body more closely into a ball and went to sleep.
