Apollo Mage & Healer |
Bought from halfnoise (45 gems).
It was happening again. He could see the burning ruins of a once grand lair, hear the echoes of screams twisting with the breeze, smell the scent of death on the air. Once again, he reminded himself that he had been training for this his whole life, that he was one of the best dragons for the job considering the current situation. Once again, he remembered his past failures. Once again, there was nothing he could do. |
Perhaps he should have left when his siblings did, rather than staying loyal to the clan. His parents had known of the danger long before the fall of the Zephyr Breeze, and it was only with their help that he'd managed to escape. He'd promised, before he left, that he would see them again, but deep down he knew it was a hollow, empty promise. Yet as he'd made that promise, something told him he would never return.
It wasn't long before the young dragon had locked his sights on a new clan, the Muketsu. The harsh environment had made him question his decisions at first, but the clan itself welcomed him with open wings and quickly earned his trust.
For a while, it seemed like his life would have been perfect. He'd taken up a life in the art of healing, and as his powers grew so did his fame within the clan. But something told him the inevitable was coming, and there was nothing he could do.
He stood helplessly now on a small ridge, his pale golden hide glowing in the sunlight as he surveyed the destruction below. This was the third clan to fall in his presence. His snout wrinkled slightly at the thought. Three times, he'd tried to live life as a normal dragon would. Three times, he'd failed to do so.
He growled softly to himself. A lone dragon had no chance of survival, he knew that. He would find a new clan, he had to. But this time would be different; this time, he wouldn't let the enemy win. You said that the last time, a voice whispered inside his head.
He flared his wings suddenly. "No," he hissed, though he realized there was no one but himself listening. "This time will be different."
He narrowed his eyes as movement caught his attention in the ruins below, his wings drooping sadly as he watched. Few had survived the battles, and fewer still had decided to face the struggle of rebuilding the lives they lost in the ruins.
He shook his head. Why was his existence such a curse to dragonkind? His powers had great potential, yet those very powers also acted as the seed of destruction for all who witnessed them. What use were his life-giving powers if he could never use them?
A small, wet nose bumped his talon. He turned, reaching for a small pile of pebbles and golden fur that squeaked at his touch. A faint, sad smile crossed his face as he gazed at the little creature.
"What now, Cici? Where should we go?"
The stoat stared back at him with bright golden eyes, as she always did. He knew it was pointless, but it comforted him to talk to her. Despite her inability to understand Common Draconic, the little stoat always seemed interested in what he had to say.
After a moment, he sighed and allowed her to climb onto his back, where she happily buried herself in his mane. He twisted his neck, making sure she was safely between his shoulders, then dove gracefully off the ridge and spread his wings. With nowhere to go, he had only one option: go wherever the wind would take him.
