the wintry winds blow,
gusts bellowing and protesting the existence of Life,
as the leaves slowly crumble,
crinkling and shriveling as the frigid shackles of cold overcome.
shining green, ever so glossy and vivid not two days ago
turn varying shades of brown and yellow as they slowly spiral away,
from the strong stem which had been their abode
and into the ground in which they lay forever more,
granted death and peace in slumber
a memory soothed by the honey-tongue that whispers,
the sweet saccharine words more poisonous than siren calls.
The first fallen were perhaps of belligerent nature,
twisting and fighting until their futile breath was cut short,
sliced by the blade of ice which knew of no remorse -
to be trodden and buried by those who would come after.
As the storm settled in, riding chariots carried by unfurled strength
announcing its presence with a loud clasp of thunder,
a warcry too late heralding the demise of Nature's fragile creatures
a parry here, a thrust there, and the skies rained down
with the remains of those unclaimed by the void.
They went silently, sacrificial lambs to an altar of invisible gods.
last of all is the one shrouded in flames,
who was once not an empty vessel devoid of thought
but it was the audacity to question, to feel, to love,
that set upon the worst curse of all
for he is no pawn on a chess piece ready to be thrown for the headless Queen,
but the lone sentry banished to the outer walls.
He sees all, but can do nothing.
Anguish is useless; love is dead; and sanity is a construct of the mind,
but the greatest vice was that Hope was not quelled --
Indeed it blossomed yet, a golden lantern in a world of darkness
flickering and revealing not only the future but also the destruction,
the light so blinding but serving only to illuminate decay and death
before it too, would vanish
before the cycle started again.
