Scathe
Mate: None Subspecies: Acidborn |
Acidic Clutch Acidborne are not skinless in the traditional sense; they are the adapted survivors of a catastrophic event. Some speculate early derivatives may have fallen into the Wyrmwound but managed to survive at great cost. Others believe a wayward Cystic bestowed its "gift" upon them. What is fact is that they produce an acidic substance which eats away at their skin. This prevents the outer layers from ever healing, but grants them a dangerous weapon against any who dare to get close. This particular acid born dragon is the child of Corrosion and Queimadura. Her father believes the acidic affliction is a curse leveled upon his bloodline by the Plaguebringer herself, and he has dedicated himself to finding some way to pay her back for the suffering she has caused him and his family. In the meantime, machines, magics, and his mate's alchemical mastery help to preserve his own well being and that of his children. Thus was his daughter born in a fetid plague nest, and carefully lifted from it. All the pain and uncertainty of a new life freed to the world gently washed away by her mother. Her father looking on and making again a bitter promise, that all would be well. |
Alchemical Studies Scathe quickly became a favored asset in the chambers around the Fumarole Cauldron where her mother worked. Even still a hatchling she pleased the clan's alchemist, Putridus, and he happily took her as an apprentice. She was highly engaged with the craft, and a quick learner, so served as his assistant throughout her time in her birth clan. With her condition carefully tended to from the day she hatched, she did not have to suffer as much as her father did growing up. The corrosive discomforts she did experience never seemed so bad. She knew of some dragons who had even worse afflictions than her! Or, that was how she felt anyway. Plus the fluid she produced was even useful as an alchemical reagent. As another bonus, whenever she got into fight or play-fights with other children, her acid meant she always won, and before long other dragons stopped picking fights with her. That was good because she preferred to spend her time studying alchemy, anyway. |
Plaguebringer Of course, she knew her father felt otherwise. She wanted to do something to help him. She knew a lot about alchemy, but maybe less than she should have about other subjects. He wanted to challenge and curse the Plaguebringer, and the Plaguebringer was supposed to live in the Wyrmwound. She thought maybe she could make just the right kind of potion that, when added to the Wyrmwound, would make conditions just so - and it would force the Plaguebringer out. Then she could be talked to or even fought with! She could have asked just about anyone and they could have outlined how and why her plan was nonsense, but she didn't ask anyone. Scathe had some sense that what she was attempting was "bad" because most dragons didn't think about the Plaguebringer as her father did. So it was her Secret Project. It was fun to have a secret project. |
She got very good at running and fighting, though. Other dragons in the clan felt her activities were an excellent test of strength, and encouraged the behavior. Corrosion Even after she was old enough to really know better, she kept up with her secret project. Part of it was stubbornness; part of her wanted to see if such a thing was even possible, and she wanted to help and please her father. She was always closer to her mother and had never really been able to pursue the arcane an occult as she did alchemy, but Corrosion had done a lot for her growing up. He helped to make sure her condition did not cause her undue pain or discomfort, he taught her how to manage and take care of it herself. He looked after her when she was hurt by the various horrors that she antagonized. Him being friends with the clan's healer was a significant boon, and Sovri was always nice to her. |
When the day came for her to finally test her new concoction in the Wyrmwound, she was both excited and a little sad. The secret project had been a fun background constant in her life, and part of her wasn't ready for it to be finished or revealed. She didn't think it was quite potent enough to summon the Plaguebringer just yet, but tests still had to be made with the real deal.
She took great care and extensive preparations when flying out over the foul lake. She had done a number of flyover tests to make sure her equipment and defenses were up to the task, and she was emboldened after these flyovers did not prove fatal. The actual test was both encouraging and catastrophic. The concoction she dumped into the lake caused the nearest section of it to froth and boil. She was nearly unable to make it back to the safety of the Keep's outer ledges; blasts of hot, contaminated air flung geysers of goop to astonishing heights. The churning fluid invigorated the wild growth of the land along the shore to swell, and spawned new horrors that the clan's warriors had to battle with for weeks following the incident. Several of the clan's non-plague dragons fell ill, and the priestess and healer labored extensively to preserve their lives and good health. The incident caught everyone's attention. Everyone in the Keep. Everyone in the clan. Even dragons in neighboring clans noticed. |
Corrosion was unhappy that Sahko was now interested in yet another of his children. He knew the insane spiral was likely to steal her work, or worse. Scathe was not happy with the sudden influx of attention or the new controversy surrounding her. It was like everyone had an opinion about her whether they knew her well or didn't. It was demoralizing.
She didn't tell anyone what her secret project was really about. No one except for her father. Corrosion was both deeply touched and dismayed. He did not want Scathe to inherit his fight against the Plaguebringer in addition to his affliction.
Departure
Scathe loved her home and her clan. She knew that she would have left someday, most children of the clan did, and she would be compelled to Search for a Charge. She just didn't expect the leaving to be soon. She wanted to stay and study and work with Putridus and her mother in the Fumarole Cauldron. She wanted to help her father, maybe not by summoning the Plaguebriner - she had now learned that probably wasn't such a good idea - but with something. Some alchemical breakthrough that could cure him, maybe.
She couldn't to any of that now, being the center of attention. There was pressure on the clan leaders to "Do Something" even though there wasn't really anything to be done. Sahko was among one of her most persistent harassers, and she knew that would be making things hard for her father, as his assistant. Putridus felt she was certainly a master Alchemist. The whole Wyrmwound affair had proved that, as inadvisable as it had been. So she had his blessing and no longer needed to be a mere student.
She didn't want to leave, but she felt she had to. All she could hope for was to find a place where she could continue her work and maybe keep in touch with her family and old teacher.
