Theme Song

The first thing Cavern remembers when she hatched was feeling alone. There were dragons around her, and she had a brother hatch soon after her, but she still felt alone. Something was missing. And she felt a growing urgency to find it. Being so young, Cavern did not know what these feelings meant or how to articulate them. So, just days old, Cavern snuck out of the nest and followed her gut, seeking out whatever was missing.

Guided by some unknown calling, deep inside her belly, Cavern wandered far away from the desert where she was born. She did not know what she was seeking, or why. All she knew was that she would find it. She trudged on tirelessly for days, ignoring food and shelter, and even other dragons. Many tried to help her, ask her questions, or chase her off. She always just kept walking, as if she didn't even notice them. If they tried to stop her, she would just stare at them with empty eyes and an expressionless face, until they let her go on her way.

She pushed onward, until she finally approached a small cave, somewhere deep in the Scarred Wasteland. The entrance was so small, she could barely squeeze through. But whatever she had been searching for was here. She could feel it. Her heart was racing as she scrabbled her way through the narrow mouth of the cave. She was almost there, she just knew it! Inside, the cave opened up to have a medium-sized space, which was filled with brilliant blue crystals.

As Cavern wandered around the cave, staring at the beautiful crystals, she finally felt peace. This is where she was meant to find. In the center of the cave, there stood one crystal that was much bigger than all the rest. As she touched her nose to this enormous crystal, a voice spoke to Cavern. Very quiet and faint, barely a whisper. She startled and looked around, but she was alone. She touched the crystal again, entranced. She then turned to look at the smaller ones, that she might be able to dig up and take with her.

A slight breeze blew into the cave, ruffling Cavern's fur pleasantly. It carried the same voice that spoke earlier. Cavern strained to make out what it was saying. The voice was cool and gentle. It whispered to her again, and almost seemed like it wasn't in her ears, but all around her and inside her head at the same time. But she was able to make out what it was saying this time.

"Don't go just yet," the voice purred. "You've only just arrived." Cavern looked around anxiously, looking for whoever was speaking. Though she'd never heard it before, it sounded strangely familiar. The central crystal seemed to glow a little bit when the voice spoke again. "I've been expecting you, little one. Calling to you since you hatched." The voice had taken on a soothing tone.

"You are the key, little one. The key to unlocking incredible things. I can give you the power to have anything you could ever want, and more. That is why I have been calling to you, and why you could hear my call, and why you came here. And all you have to do to receive that power is to touch the crystal in the center of this cave and accept it.. All the crystals in this cave carry the power, but it has been trapped here for centuries, and long forgotten. But you carry the very crystals needed to take this power, they are growing on you. Take this power and return it to the world."

Cavern did as the voice instructed. She touched the central crystal with her nose. All of the crystals in the cave started to glow, then crumble away as their light flowed into the central crystal, which grew brighter. So bright, Cavern had to close her eyes.

She felt something push its way into her mind. Not something physical, more like thoughts and feelings she couldn't control, alongside pressure inside her head. After a few seconds, the central crystal grew dim and dull. Flat, gray-colored.

Cavern felt like something was terribly wrong now. Like she made a big mistake. Thoughts that were not Cavern's started to fill up her mind and overwhelm her, causing her to curl up in a ball and howl. The voice spoke again in her head, but no longer in a comforting tone. No, now it was gleeful. "Finally, I am free! Sealed away in those stones for so long. Now then, child, you must do as I say from now on. Or else..." the voice trailed off, but suddenly Cavern felt a weight start to crush her. "...Or else, this is only the beginning of what could happen to you." the voice finished as the weight was lifted as suddenly as it appeared.

"I am cursed to where I cannot leave these crystals. Luckily for me, you happen to be growing them, meaning I can just hitch a ride and finally leave this cave." The voice directed Cavern to travel West. They left the wasteland, and entered an area full of pink mountains. The voice lead Cavern to a different cave. "Back before I was cursed, this was my home. So now that I am free, this will be mine once again."

Cavern knew some things that she was never told, and had never really learned. She just knew them. The voice is some kind of spirit, and picked this cave out because it was somewhere with a lot of energy. It seeks to break the curse through magic.

The voice did not lie about having incredible power. It was able to stop Cavern from aging. "Since I'm going to be stuck here for a while, I don't need my free ride to die on me." the voice explained. Also, stay away from other dragons. Since I'm here, and they can't know about that. They'd be able to see it in your eyes." Shocked, Cavern ran to the nearest pool of water to look at her own eyes. Yes, the voice was right. Her pupils changed into slits, and the whites of her eyes were now dark. Unnatural-looking.

The voice keeps Cavern away from all other dragons, and makes her start hoarding all sorts of gems and stones and metals and other trinkets. Go out and collect them and sort them in the cave, every day. Whenever she so much as thinks of not listening, some part of her will twinge in pain. Just enough to remind her that she doesn't have a choice.
