Biography
Amidst the copse of trees you come across a glimmering tower made of mother of pearl and milky marble. All around the tower are dozens, no hundreds of birds. They fly so close to you that you feel the susurration of their feathers against your cheeks.
A perch stands by the door to the tower, which is currently occupied by a giant blue and white owl. The owl blinks its large silver eyes at you.
"Who are you?"
You answer.
"What do you want?"
You answer.
The owl gestures to the door and it swings open. There are more birds inside. Birds that shine like mercury, birds that sing like pan flutes and other birds that have human eyes.
"Come up, come up...let the birds lead you." A voice whispers in your ear.
You begin to climb the stairs, slowly. As the voice promised, small birds, sparrows and finches hop up the stairs before you, leading you.
Despite the presence of so many birds, every surface is so impeccably clean that you can see your reflection in the stone steps and the air smells of honey and cream.
The stairs wind up and up, like the inside of a curling shell. Finally, you reach the top and another door. As you raise your hand to knock, the door opens without a touch.
You are immediately faced with a man in lavender and gossamer robes. Birds perch on either end of his chaise lounge. One of the birds, an emerald eagle passes the man a crystal goblet in its beak. The man's elegant fingers curl around the stem as he brings the drink to his lips.
He drinks deeply, maintaining eye contact with you.
"Welcome to the Tower of Avem."
It's only now that you've noticed that the man has wings as well, made of a hundred thousand tiny soft feathers, which cascade from baby blue to blushing purple.
"What is it that you desire?" He reaches out to you with his free hand. "I can make all your wishes come true?"
Do you take his hand?
