Complete and total silence fills the air as I walk into the room, my sister by my side. I'm totally awestruck by the sheer number of dragons in the room. From the smallest of Fae to the tallest Imperial, all stand still and watch me with curious eyes. Some of them look nervous- I can tell they think me odd, being as big as I am. I almost attempt to reassure them, but I'm cut off by Zylah.

"Demonix, rejoice! My brother, Harou, has returned! I should also probably mention he's a Drakkonwolf. Make him feel welcome, and if I hear a peep of complaint, I'll hide a viper in your rooms tonight. Oh, and Harou, my name is Kali now- though you are free to call me what you like."

Hell of an entrance, I suppose. Most of the dragons go back to their routines, chatting with each other, forging armor, and one Wildclaw seems to be eyeing me with suspicion as he places a mushroom in his bag. I notice a silver Fae dart over to Zy- er, Kali, from the crowd, and they nuzzle each other before walking off and leaving me alone.

I have no idea what I'm doing.

"A statue? In a dream? This is one of the oddest cases I've ever heard! You must be very strong, Auroxas, without the weight of your wings. What's the heaviest thing you've ever moved?"

"Moved? Hmm... I've carried great pines on my back before to decorate for Nocturnal Night festivities, does that count?"

"That's incredible! I've only ever-"

"Harou! Your room is ready, time to get you settled into the lair."

Reluctantly, I nod a farewell to Auroxas and follow Kali, casting a passing glance to the dozen or so dragons who eavesdropped on our conversation. They've seen Drakkonwolves before, but not like me... not one that can turn at will. Most here seem to be stuck in one form or another, or even as a hybrid, like the Imperial. Others seem to only turn on certain nights, and have little to no control over themselves. It seems that their strength level also varies among those- one might be stronger as a dragon or as a wolf! I never knew we were so diverse.

Kali and I crawl into an alcove near her own, nearly dead center of the hive-like wall in the back of the cavern. I'm led down a tunnel, steep and jagged and fun to trek through. It feels like an age before I finally reach my room, and it's incredible!

Featherback hides line the floor and walls, and my claws dig into their soft feel almost immediately. I have a bed framed in bone and iron, and it looks to be covered in unknown furs. Across the ceiling are jars of mage-created fireflies, casting a soft glow over everything. In one corner of the room is a pile of old toys that I recognize from before I left our original clan... I thank Kali profusely, and she gives me a rough shoulder nudge and a grin before running back through the tunnel.

Time for a long nap.

"Akel, stop! We can't keep going like this! You're going to lose the other egg! It's been four days, you're going to burst soon!"

Thunderous rain pounds the earth, drowning out nearly all sound as two mirrors run for their lives through hostile Light territory. They flee from a hidden beast, a skeletal, eldritch creature that has no true form and only seeks to burn away their life force. Akel had been in the process of birthing eggs when the creature attacked, and was forced to halt the process and run with her mate Dimi as far as possible, carrying one egg in her belly and one in her mouth.

"There! Akel, take shelter under those stones! We're far enough away, it'll lose us in the rain."

Nodding, Akel dashed for a crumbled structure and dove inside, Dimi following close behind and lashing the doorway with his tail to cause a rockfall, locking them in.

Akel carefully placed her egg on a mound of dirt, the shell pulsing with a soft blue luminescence. Almost immediately, the mother collapsed next to it and began to lay the second egg in the darkness of the room, with Dimi powerlessly watching as his beloved hissed from pain and exhaustion. He sat down beside her and whispered calming words- hoping beyond all hope that the shade demon had moved on.

Three days pass with Akel and Dimi locked inside a small, ruined building, fasting in favor of protecting their eggs. The second egg had been born stark white, with elemental energy surrounding it that of Light rather than Shadow. It glows now with stunning brilliance, lighting the area so much that its parents can hardly stand to look at it. They feel an instinctive hatred towards it, but it is still their child and they still must raise it as their own as soon as it is safe to return.

"Dimi...."

"Yes, Akel?"

"We should leave. The creature has surely moved on to other prey, and we cannot care for them properly on an empty stomach. I'm exhausted and I'm sure you are as well, but there is no way I will leave them to die here in this horrible ruin."

"Dimi starts to open his mouth, but thinks better of it and begins working his way around the rocks, helpfully lit by his soon-to-be-born child. He finds a small breeze and digs at it, and the stones tumble away, opening into a shrouded wasteland of ancient structures and lost civilizations. He turns back to Akel, who nods and carefully pushes her eggs out one after the other. Then, she crawls through, with Dimi biting onto her tail in case of another cave-in.

It... should be broad daylight, their internal clocks scream this, but the area is enveloped in a dark fog pierced only by the light of the eggs. Something feels wrong somehow, but less in a dangerous sense, and more in the way that you feel if a portrait of someone has the eyes off-center. Akel shrugs it off and picks up her homeland egg, while Dimi shivers and grabs the newer one. Neither notice as a small golden lizard skitters away from Dimi's egg as it is retrieved, and together the two Mirrors march on a many-day's journey towards the forest, praying to Shadowbinder that they'll find a new place in the Tangled Wood with enough safety to protect them.

Six weeks have gone by since the tumultuous arrival of the eggs, and Akel, alongside Dimi, have managed to make a temporary home in a small den beneath some driftwood. The eggs hatched into nearly twin mirrors, one with violet eyes that shattered light in a brilliant hex, and the other with a pale yellow gaze surrounded by darkness. The siblings played and fought with each other in astounding displays of elemental ability for ones so young, and for a while they almost seemed to be too strong, though their abilities were tempered with each passing day. Their parents, of course, were incredibly worried at first, though their fear and distrust of the light child soon faded into memory.

The firstborn child, a hyper and excitable female, had been given the name Zylah. The second-born, reserved and strong, was Harou. Zylah was a hatchling of few words, though Harou learned far quicker than most and had even begun to speak words his parents had never known. Tonight, though, is to be their first hunt.

"Ma, do we really have to do this? I'm tired today."

"Hunt! Hunt! Lizards! Deer!"

"Harou, if you don't learn now, you'll never be able to feed yourself in the future. Come along you two, night falls soon, we should get into position."

Dimi nods to his family and backs into the den, tired from fighting a wild boar not too long before. The three other Mirrors set out from the entryway and Akel leads her young to a small field, lit by starlight and the slow rise of a full moon. A herd of ampelope graze upwind. Akel eyes a fawn, and turns towards Zylah.

"Do you know what to do? Sneak up as close as you can without being caught, and pounce for the neck the second you get the chance?"

Zylah nods excitedly and positions herself, then crawls silently towards the fawn as Akel and Harou watch. Harou begins to notice an itch in his claws, but ignores it and continues to cheer Zylah on in his head.
