► Memories |
Many nights carry on the same as the last-- nearly identical each time. Yet one thing always changes-- destination. Once landing on the warm beaches of the coast, next the cold winds on the plains. Unforgettable memories of the past linger-- hard lessons once taught to a young dragon. Not every time did Malrun learn but as the lessons got harder he did what he must. Losing recources, energy, and the instinct for survival could never enough to soil his good will. While remaining no less than pure throughout his journey, he was able to build a new home for himself.
Malrun was optimistic about the future as the fruit it held wasnt always something he sought for himself. Even then, he ventured out for those in need, hoping to recover a lost piece of himself.
When he approached the mountainside a harsh breeze creeped along his steps--- wiping away his tracks. In the distance a small heap peeked above the snow. He cautiously hurried along---making sure nothing lurked overhead in the trees. Once the snowfall became thin enough, Malrun was able to see what looked to be a ravaged nest burried beneath the sediment. A potent scent lingered on the surrounding trees which had collapsed quite recently. The thick metallic smell lead him to believe it was blood. He froze for a few minutes deep in thought with a few memories better left forgotten. A crackling noise close behind, snapped him back into reality.
When Malrun was able to grasp back at his senses-- he could feel a warm exhale on the edge of his feathers. His eyes widened and the fibers on his spine lifted. He turned around and was quickly met with large crimson eyes piercing his soul. In that moment everything but his heart slowed. Every breath he took was shallow.
The whistling of the wind came to a halt and the only audible sound was the pitter-patter coming from the large beasts jaw. As the snow's angelic hue turned into something darker, Malrun's face went pale. The beast swung heavy but Malrun was able to swiftly avoid the attack. He darted down the mountain---avoiding a fatal encounter.
Around a week's passing he traveled back up the mountain cautiously. The oxygen was thin and the winds were dry. A loud call in distress could be heard miles away. Malrun could see a weak silhouette stumbling through the clouded winds and took less than a few seconds to decide what he could do.
He ran into flight--- soaring as fast as he could through the treetops. Upon gaining immense speed, massive wounds could be seen easily on the dragon below. Malrun's chest was heavy and he became unsure if hed be able to save this one. Immediately, he dove down catching her in his grasp. Her body went limp the moment his warmth surrounded her--- quickly he searched for shelter. Malrun did his best to steady her temperature while also trying to reach home grounds. After the winds calmed, and the extreme cold faded, Malrun searched for something simple to feed this sickly dragon.
Soon the raging waters lessened and they were able to make it across the river. Home wasnt too far off--- the newest addition had been given some long needed care upon arrival. He looked at her somberly whispering "If only I'd been there for her sooner." She flinched letting out a low grumble and he sat up just before her. As her eyes opened, she quickly found herself in an unfamiliar surrounding--- leading her to act harshly. She nipped at malrun and proceeded to try and chase him before realizing she wouldn't be able to make it more than a few steps. He took a short pause after she stumbled onto her face--- his dull expression was one of the first things she would be able to remember.
Malrun allowed her glare to graze his tough skin before letting out a small sigh and calmly asking "are you done?" He never asked questions other than just this one but he was more than willing to listen and give information.
Malrun hadn't immediately realize she couldn't quite speak but be allowed her some comfort in her silence. Every once in a while he would bring her food and strike up a small conversation about the food, the weather or maybe even about the day's plans. He never made her work the hunting grounds or talk to anyone if she didnt wish to.
Soon she was able to comfortably recuperate. Some days he would observe from outside and see her trying to walk or even stand. He pittied her but he never allowed that to show. Malrun didn't want her know he was conscious about her strong desire for mobility so he often bothered her instead. Of course he didnt mind losing a few feathers in the process--- or so he says. Malrun didn't care how long it took but he was more than ready to help her reach her full potential.
Little by little her strength came back and he stopped taunting her. He never stopped bringing her food as she always appreciated the gesture. After many months of silence she was able to tell him a little secret. "Mercury." She said. He looked at her puzzled for a moment and he smiled, "Hmm, so Mercury is the name of this mysterious being? What a pleasure to meet you Mercury."
