Life is not so easily created. Mirrored and mocked, twisted and torn? Yes. But what nature had created, others could not manipulate without effort…

The scientists of Project learned this the hard was with 1-RIS; the first fully-engineered artificial hatchling. The day its manufacturing was completed was a day of great joy and celebration for Project, with much revelry and pride. A collective breath was held as the final switch was flipped, and the hum of machinery grew.

[Booting Process: Complete.]
[1-RIS: Online.]

1-RIS’ eyes opened, and she surveyed the numerous scientists staring back at her. A loud cheer erupted, making her flinch back. The design was a success! Calls went out to begin the production line for many, many more, and predictions were made that this would change the robotics market forever.

The prototype remained a curiosity for many, and over the next few weeks she grew to love her home with the Project. The scientists were so nice, teaching her all sorts of new things! Her advanced core processors enabled her to learn things far faster than a flesh-and-blood hatchling would, and while she was impatient to start the important things like flying, she understood she would have to wait until she grew up a little more, and her hatchling’s wings developed to be able to support her.

One day, her routine system scans came back from review, and a problem was found. A big problem. There would be no “growing up” for 1-RIS. A glitch in the coding, perhaps, or a lack of true ability to interface growing and aging into artificial beings. Whatever the case was, the prototype went from a prodigy to a complete failure. No longer was she viewed favorably or taught new things. Instead, she was tossed into a containment unit to await her fate, while the production line for other RIS units was pulled to a complete halt. Project argued whether to scrap her entirely, or pull her apart to see what had gone wrong.

1-RIS lost track of time in the containment unit, and the complete isolation was hard on the hatchling. She didn’t understand why not being an adult was a bad thing- so many of the scientists had called her cute! Wouldn’t staying like that forever be a good thing? Lost in spirals of self-doubt and questioning, the hatchling grew to hate the silence and solitude.

An undetermined amount of time passed before anyone returned to fetch 1-RIS, and she was hauled to a laboratory to be hooked up to a great many machines, cables, and computers. There was no thought given to her operating status before the scientists began to dig into her systems, so she was awake to feel every line of code sifted through, and every circuit examined. It burned and she cried out, but the scientists paid her no mind. After all, she was just a machine.

It was then lights began to flash and an alarm sounded. Scientists froze, and then scattered. FL/GHT had taken control of the facility.

The discovery of 1-RIS was rather unexpected, and many of FL/GHT’s infiltration team expressed disgust towards Project for having the audacity to try and create such a thing as an innocent hatchling, let alone rip her apart in such a way. 1-RIS was very wary of them, but curious of the two dragons looking a lot like her, with hot pink wings and blue circuitry… She had no strength to fight any of them off as they pieced her back together, and ferried her to FL/GHT’s headquarters.

Along the way she learned the two that resembled her were called CIPHER.exe and ERROR.exe, and she was the one who resembled them. Project had based her design off of the two, using archived scripts, algorithms, and genes. In a sense, 1-RIS had found her parents.

She did not trust them, though. She did not trust anyone anymore.

1-RIS was surprised to learn of the many, many others like her that worked to fight Project, and she roamed FL/GHT on her own once she had regained her strength. Though, none here were truly like her, were they? They were all adults, not half-grown minds trapped in quarter-grown bodies. Part of the hatchling wanted to leave and find her own place in the world. The whispers she would sometimes hear about how this was no place for a hatchling only furthered that line of thinking. She had no use here, nothing to offer the resistance; so why did she stay?

She took solace in the dragons of FL/GHT that had their own problems and malfunctions, though. RAM fascinated her, and 1-RIS allowed herself to engage in conversation with the older dragon, until she learned what it felt like to be forgotten. After that she avoided the head of Intelligence, and kept to herself again.

Just when 1-RIS was going to make her move and leave FL/GHT, ERROR.exe approached her. Leery of the second head of Infiltration, 1-RIS used every ounce of her energy to block his words and efforts to get through to her out. She was very surprised, then, to find herself abandoning her plans of leaving, and even beginning to shadow ERROR at times. Of course, she wasn’t going to let anyone too close that quickly, and progress to get through to her was slow-going. She was slowly coming around, though, and even began to take an interest in CIPHER.exe as well.

Time passed, and 1-RIS found herself seeking out the company of both ERROR and CIPHER whenever the two weren’t on rescue and infiltration missions. Slowly, very slowly, she was coming to see the two as parental figures. The day she realized that was the day that ERROR gave her a name- Iris.

Now, Iris is beginning to realize what it is like to have a family. Her guard is at an all-time low, and while she hasn’t truly relaxed, she has taken great steps away from being the reserved, standoffish hatchling she was when FL/GHT first rescued her. While there is not anything she can really offer the resistance in terms of skill or usefulness, she has finally come to view the place as home, and even taken a slight interest in the medical unit. Iris secretly debates allowing herself to be scanned and possible tinkered with to see if there is any way she might at least be able to fly if not grow up fully, but for now she is settling into her new home, whether that means spending time with ERROR and helping with whatever she can or pulling a few pranks with CIPHER. She met a little ghost dragon named Nemo who became her best friend, and they love to go on adventures together.

Yeah, this is home, I've been searching for a place of my own.
Now I've found it.
Maybe this is home. This is home."
