Soren came to the clan at a very young age, before he had even learned the basics of speech. Thief came back from patrol one day with a small hatchling clutched to his chest and that was the end of that. Nobody is certain exactly where he came from, because Thief didn’t tell them, and Soren couldn’t tell them at the time. Regardless, the clan Became immediately fond of him. He had a way with plants and animals that few in the clan possessed or even understood. He was quiet and gentle, even as a hatchling, and he stuck closely to Thief’s side. Thief effectively adopted Soren. The clan never understood why, but Thief constantly checks on Soren to see that he’s not ill.

Soren’s first memory is of a clan meeting. As his clanmates gathered in the large clearing in the center of their camp, looks were cast toward him, some full of suspicion, others radiating pity. He was scared, though he didn’t have words for that particular feeling yet. Instead he wailed wordlessly until Thief scooped him up. Thief radiated a sense of calm safety that none of the other dragons did. Thief cooed at the tiny Gaoler until he quieted, and then proceeded to carry him to the center of the clearing. There they were met by a small blue tundra, and a large golden guardian. A brief conversation ensued, very little of which Soren understood.

“Where did you get him?” The tundra asked, gesturing pointedly toward the watchful hatchling in Thief’s grasp. The large brown Gaoler shrugged evasively.
“Answer me,” the tundra pressed, “where did you find him?”

“Kihor,” Thief said, “I cannot tell you, although it pains me. Have I ever stolen for anything other than a good reason?”

Kihor regarded Thief curiously for a moment. The Guardian beside him interjected suddenly, bringing her large head down to the level of Kihor and Soren. Soren reached out and gently patted her nose. “He doesn’t really seem to be doing any harm. Besides, we know Thief’s history,” she pointed out “his heart is true, even if the action is not.”

“Thank you Aria,” Thief said quietly, but fervently.

Kihor paused for a moment longer. “Is he safer here?” Thief nodded solemnly.

“It’s up for a vote then,” Aria announced. “I propose that the child stays. All in favor?”

There was a shuffling noise as wings and paws were raised.

“Any opposed?”

Silence.

“It is decided. Soren Thiefson remains.”
