Kai was found by Ulysses and Venger when they were leading a patrol in the Light flight. The hatchling was taken in and adopted by the two, who at the time believed him to be a strange, mutated tundra dragon. Kai couldn't recall how he'd ended up there given he was a Plague dragon, but could vaguely remember being told to hide by his parents. Given they never returned for him, they were likely killed. He gained an older adoptive sister upon being adopted named Echo, though wasn't too fond of being treated as a little brother despite being younger than her. His personality was soon apparent as he grew older and time passed by. Kai was rather serious and demanding, especially when it came to situations that needed decisive actions. When a group of gaolers crossed the patrol's path, Kai initially took a disliking to his own kind. As the two groups mingled hesitantly with each other, he slowly began trusting them and asking questions about their species. However, the rift within his own group was growing due to the events happening around them. Annoyed and wanting to defend his fathers, Kai killed Ardolen and tossed her body over a cliff and into the ocean. No one ever suspected him of the crime and some were convinced the nocturne had simply left them. The two groups travelled back home with Kai still asking and learning more about gaolers along side the rest of the dragons in the patrol. He thought he'd gotten rather close to Val, a female gaoler from the group, and eventually asked her to be his mate. Upon being turned down however, he began avoiding the group's makeshift camp that had been set up near his own. The lives of his family were in danger anyway. Mirror packs that roamed Plague had attacked his home more than once and several dragons had died. It frustrated him beyond measure and he tried to do something drastic to hurt them back. Kai snuck out and stole two mirror pups from the pack, keeping them in a hole far from home so no one found out. Every day he'd check in on them, keeping them alive while he waited for the pack to try taking them back. The male, Ribos, didn't like him- not that it really mattered- but strangely, the female, Soraka, thought to see the best in the gaoler. It was hard work to cover his tracks to avoid suspicion but for a time he was able to keep up with his duties and have time to watch over them as well. Another attack however left his father, Venger, dead. He blamed Kima for his death and killed her for leaving Venger, among other dragons to die. In his grieving he stopped visiting the hostage hatchlings and they escaped. Kai didn't bother going after them, believing they'd die out in the Scarred Wasteland anyway. It was clear the mirror pack wasn't coming back. He lost Echo soon after. Kai still blamed Kima for the deaths but wondered if there was something he could've done. He'd been in the area, yet hadn't been able to save them. Kai mourned the loss, the revenge not doing much to help, and still keeps a piece of his father's fur from Venger's nest. Dragons were starting to get suspicious though due to his darkened mood. To throw them off, Kai nested with Soprano- another gaoler from the group they'd partnered with. He didn't really care for her but pretended to for the sake of covering up the violent deeds he'd done. The nest hatched while he was away, his son dying shortly after hatching. Despite no one being at fault, Kai blamed himself, believing he should've at least been there. Since then, he's decided against having more hatchlings. Not that he had an option. His crimes eventually came to light after he tracked down the mirror pack and killed them himself. No matter how much he argued they were for the greater good- to protect and defend his family- but even his remaining father, Ulysses, seemed against him. Kai was taken to a prison cell within the newly built Bleak Meadow Prison to be left in a cell to rot. Occasionally his father- now a guard at the prison- would visit him but he didn't talk much with him. Soraka showed up to see him one last time before moving on with her life. He didn't get why she cared so much to want to speak with him let alone tell him about Ribos' coming to kill him. Ribos attacked the prison to get revenge on him once and, much to Kai's amusement, ended up being imprisoned as well. They were of course kept apart along with Ribos' kin who shared the goal of killing Kai as well. Now his days are spent lying in his cell. Ulysses still comes by on the occasion to sit in silent company with him. He even began bringing Kai's new 'sister' as well- a gaoler hatchling named Sheilah. She liked to talk a lot, though he tolerated it especially since this forever hatchling could talk with the dead. It hurt to think about Venger and Echo- he was sure they disapproved of him- but knowing they still existed in some form was a comfort...
