Irbis was once a Keeper. He was charged with guarding Shade-tainted beasts in a prison deep in the Southern Icefield. He was extremely proud of his position, and his pride would be his downfall. Despite being very young, he quickly became well known for his dedication to his job, how diligent he was. All of this praise went to his head, he became over-confident and cocky, and tended to take on more than he could handle. He was quick to agree to take on extra shifts and cover for his comrades, as a chance to show off how serious he took his duties and how well he could do them.
After picking up several back-to-back shifts for his peers, Irbis would frequently work for days on end. Eventually, this proved to be too much for him to handle. After 4 days of near-nonstop work, he wound up falling asleep on the job, having succumbed to exhaustion. This was the opportunity that the imprisoned creatures needed, and a jailbreak ensued. They broke free and all fled at once. The entire prison was overwhelmed, and they were unable to recapture all of the creatures that escaped.
Ashamed for his failure and of letting his comrades down, guilty of allowing the jailbreak to occur, he fled. He abandoned his home, his duties, his peers, his family. Everything he knew. He could not face them after what he had done. He ran far away from anything familiar to him. That prison was all he knew, his entire life. Now he was on his own, in a world he knew nothing about, plagued with shame for the disaster he caused at the prison.
After days of wandering, of running away into an unfamiliar world, he encountered a very strange creature. The thing was tiny! It had bright green and yellow wings and body. Irbis had never met another species of dragon before. The tiny creature flitted around him, and eventually settled on top of his head between his great horns.
Irbis was fascinated with this tiny, colorful creature. Then the creature spoke, and shocked Irbis. It could speak his language! It spoke in a very monotone voice, and had a foreign accent, but they spoke the same language nonetheless. The creature introduced itself as Dandelion. It had never seen a dragon like him, what was he, what is his name? Irbis introduced himself, and explained how he was a Gaoler, from the Southern Icefield. The creature asked what he was doing so far from home, then.
Irbis hung his head in shame, and recounted the tale of how he let everyone down. How he and his hubris allowed for the worst disaster in the history of his prison to occur. How it was all his fault, what a disgrace he was to the Keepers. He expected this creature to be horrified with his actions. However, the creature laughed in response to his story.
"That sounds like a pretty big mistake you made there! Boy, you sound so serious. You need to lighten up a little. It isn't the end of the world, you're being too hard on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes. Nothing you can do now but move on, move forward. Long as you learned from your mistake." The creature said. Irbis was speechless. How could this creature be so relaxed about his failure? Perhaps he didn't understand the gravity of what he had done? He explained again how terrible the jailbreak was and that it was all his fault. But Dandelion's stance did not change on the matter.
"You look as lost as a harpy in the kelp beds" Dandelion said with a laugh. "Let me show you around, and teach you about the rest of the world. Since apparently you never learned anything other than how to be a stickler." And with that, he began to explain to Irbis all about the rest of Sornieth. All the different regions, the different dragon breeds, the other creatures in the world. The history of the lands and the different deities. Irbis was baffled with how much there was to this world.
Dandelion, who Irbis now knew was a fae dragon, taught him many other things. He taught him how to forgive himself. That there is more to life than his duties. That one can move on and grow past their mistakes. That one's mistakes do not define who they are. Dandelion became Irbis' companion, and the two traveled together for a long time. They grew very close, and Irbis vowed to protect his tiny fae from all harm. This tiny, bright, carefree spirit captivated Irbis and stole his heart. And he would do everything in his power to guard his beloved.
They eventually settled into a clan in the Starwood Strand. Irbis carved out a den for the two of them at the fringes of camp. This clan was full of many different kinds of dragons. Many of which Irbis did not trust. There were two that reeked of death and decay, and one who never seemed to age and had an otherworldly aura about him.
Irbis decided that the best way to keep Dandelion safe from these dangerous individuals, and from all other dangers of the world, was to keep him in their den at all times. And when they must leave, to never leave his side. He followed his fae everywhere whenever he left the den. But Irbis did his best to keep them in the safety of their den as much as possible.
Dandelion seemed to have a knack for putting himself in unnecessary danger. Spending time with dragons Irbis did not trust, exploring outside of camp, flying high out of Irbis' reach. Irbis wished he would just listen to him and stay in the den! But Dandelion seemed so sad when they spend so much time in the den. His usually bright, happy mate was quiet and moped around the den the entire time. Why couldn't he be happy here in the den with Irbis? The den was spacious and safe, and they were there together. He even let him decorate their den with useless silly trinkets, just so he would be happy there. But Dandelion wanted to leave all the time to spend time with the other dragons in the clan.
Irbis got more and more pushy about staying in the den. He apparently pushed Dandelion too far, because his sweet fae turned on him in a rage. He yelled at Irbis for being much too overbearing, of keeping him cooped up all the time and not letting him do anything by himself, of not letting him have friends. He accused him of being too controlling, of treating him like a prisoner instead of his mate, of not trusting him at all. Dandelion threatened to leave Irbis and the entire clan if he did not back off.
Heartbroken, Irbis fled the den, and fled camp. He ran away from his mistakes once again. For the first time in a long time, he slept alone, without his Dandelion nestled on top of him in his long fluffy coat. He stayed away for several days. Finally, he marched himself back to camp to face his mistakes and try to fix them. He sought out Dandelion and apologized for how he treated him. He couldn't guarantee he would change overnight, but he promised to change. He would stop cooping him up and breathing down his neck every second they were not in their den.
Nowadays, Irbis just watches and worries for Dandelion's safety from afar. He makes a point to never tell him what to do, never force him into the den, never stop him from spending time with other dragons. It drives Irbis crazy sometimes, but Dandelion is much happier this way. So Irbis puts up with it, because he wants his Dandelion to be happy, and to never be overbearing or controlling like that again.
