It was a clear night, no clouds covering the stars. The soft illumination from the stars led Bluespark and Hathor along their weekly trek through the woods. This ritual happened over the course of two nights, the first being spent in the woods, and the second spent in the soft field that laid at the heart of it.
The journey was almost complete, with the edge of the field popping up into view. The sound of fireflies buzzing around was the only noise to be heard. These nights were the only night of rest the fighters had, and the only time they had to share together.
They found Her on the ground. The woods gave way to the field, and in the middle lay a small, weak imperial. Hathor immediately rushed to the Child's side. Cradling the small imps head in her arm, she called out to Bluespark.
"It's hurt!" Hathor frantically tried to find a pulse, and was horrified to see that there was none. Yet, the Child still was breathing.
Bluespark cautiously approached the duo. She was more sceptic than her partner, and was not ready to treat this stranger as anything but a threat.
The stars glistened off of the Child's back, showing off her protruding bones. As Bluespark leaned in to examine the emaciated imp, the Child began to stir.
With a yelp, Hathor dropped the limp body. Landing with a sharp thud on the ground, clouds filled the sky and shrouded the field in darkness. Hathor pressed into Bluespark's side, shivering from the sudden cold that blanketed the field.
Bluespark bristled in anticipation for a fight. Instead, the Child began to stand. She was small, trembling with every movement. Turning towards the two dragons that had found Her, She began to slowly open Her eyes.
As Her eyes opened, a cold light poured out from the empty sockets. A brilliant purple swirled around the light, highlighting everything in a vibrant shade of lavender.
Bluespark recoiled in fear. The dragon had never seen a dragon like this. She had clanmates with ooze dripping from their eyes, and ones that were painfully afflicted with too many eyes, but this light was new.
Hathor on the other hand, recognized this light. This was the same light that her father developed before he disappeared. She knew the anguish that a dragon must face to turn their eyes like this. She slowly put one foot foreword
"What are you doing?" Bluespark hissed between her clenched teeth. Hathor ignored her, and took another step forward.
"Stop!" Bluespark attempted to block her partners path, but Hathor pushed her out of the way.
"I know what I'm doing." Confidently, Hathor walked towards the Child. With each step she took, the trailing light moved out of her way. The Child fixed Her gaze upon the approaching dragon.
The pain in Her eyes was unmeasurable. Hathor could see streams of light streaming down Her face, unable to be contained by Her eyes. Hathor stopped a foot in front of the imp. She sat back on her haunches, and held out her arms.
"Come, little one. I understand."
The Child contemplated moving for what seemed like an eternity. Time stood still. The fireflies had disappeared, and the clouds seemed like they hadn't moved since they appeared.
Finally, in one swift move the Child collapsed in Hathor's arms. With that, Her eyes shut. The light disappeared along with the clouds, and the brightest thing in the field was just her bones glowing softly in the starlight.
"Come, look at our Child." Hathor whispered to Bluespark.
Bluespark crept towards her partner, keeping her footsteps quiet on the soft grass. She took a seat next to Hathor, and stared down at the Child.
"What is She?"
Hathor tilted her head at this question.
"She is an orphan. No dragon can see like this without going through intense pain. When we locked eyes, She shared Her pain with me. I understand Her. And now, we must protect Her." Smiling, Hathor stroked the small dragons mane. "She needs a name."
Bluespark paused for a second before answering.
"How about Overseer?"
Hathor's smile grew wider.
"I like that."
Overseer was nestled in Hathor's arms, and began lightly snoring. With a slight chuckle, Hathor laid her back down. Curling up next to Her, she beckoned to Bluespark.
"Come, love." She patted the ground on the other side of Overseer. "We must rest before the journey back."
Bluespark took one more glance at her new Child, and laid down next to Her. Soon enough, all three were asleep. The stars continued to reflect off of the Child's bones, and the soft light lulled the new parents to sleep. Around them, the quiet was replaced with sounds of bugs chirping and owls hooting, but nothing disturbed them that night.
Overseer had found a new family, and the clans lives would never be the same thanks to it.
