- A merchant by day, pirate by night
- something about a curse, maybe the tidelord
- too many teeth
- can breathe underwater, probably has gills somewhere
- maybe Maren kidnapped him as soon as he hatched and kept him underwater in a grotto? Forcing him to scry visions for them in an attempt to find the Tidelord before anyone else (and possibly kill him).
- i think I can see him as being rather quiet and having a difficulty with speech, which often sounds strained and gurgly. His true voice is very pleasant, though
- His companion is a Murkbottom Frigatebird. Bigger, faster, meaner than a Gull.

Cotton is more at home in the water than around other people. He can stay down there for hours, raiding sunken ships and filling his bags with treasures to sell. His familiar is the only other creature he can tolerate for more than a few hours.
