Wythra
"Everything is going to.....no....everything is alright."
  • Dawn—a brand-new day, and so you rise and get dressed. The shirt goes on, and the vest, then the tiny ornaments that make you smile. Lastly, a puff of enchanted flowers, whirling around you in a fragrant wind.
“I need more flowers,” the sad voice inside you whispers, “to block out the stench of decay....
“—No, I need more flowers, because they just smell so nice.”

Flowers, you need more flowers....Where would you get them in this day and age? “Oh, those shops,” you think to yourself as you smile. "They never restock on time."
You can't recall the last time you even saw a shop. A flower shop. A food shop. Any shop at all.
    “They never restock on time.”

  • The tome is dirty but readable, and you can still make out the spells it contains. You and the others practice these together, tearing straw dummies apart with fire, laughing delightedly at the luminous wisps you create.
A bell clangs, and dragons bustle past you to stand atop the outpost walls. A couple of them call back to you: “Help us! We need to force away the—”
You shake your head; you’ve just gone on to the next page, and there’s another spell you want to try. You laugh again at how simple it is, multicolored lines of light twirling around your forepaws. You do frown at the noise in the background, but you know there’s really no need to worry. Those guards, always so boisterous, but surely they can handle it! After all, what’s beyond the walls can’t really be that bad.

  • One of the guards approaches you. She holds out a forepaw, showing you a long, nasty gash. It can’t be more than a few minutes old, but already it is turning black, the decay eating away at the edges like fire around a parchment.
A quick whisper from you, and the infection is burned away, leaving mostly healthy flesh. You fetch some bandages and salve and carefully dress the wound. You nod in satisfaction at your handiwork, and indicate that she should be more careful with her weapons.
“No, I was injured out there. I was fighting a—”
You shush her, your hiss splitting the air like a knife, and the sharpness of your voice stings her into silence. You wait a couple of seconds, so that the remonstration sinks in.
These guards really should be more careful with their weapons.

  • A traveler arrives one day, gliding over the outpost walls. She seems hungry for conversation: words spill out her mouth a mile a minute. But you try not to look at her face, because the grayness reminds you of the ash blanketing the ground.
“How do you live here? What do you do?”
A bookkeeper—you indicate your office, lowering your head modestly. Her eyes blaze in disbelief: “A bookkeeper? That’s your job here?!”
You don’t understand her surprise. You’re lucky to have a job at all! So many poor souls don't have jobs—
You remember them now, lying in the street, twisted and broken and burned. The unmoving ones were bad enough, but the worst were the ones who could still reach out to you as you fled, pleading with tearful eyes....
    You’re lucky. You’re so lucky.
You push past her; there are already too many questions, and you still have work to do.

  • It's quiet work, and comforting in its monotony. Balancing debit and credit, making sure all the numbers line up. "Money lost, money earned...Refugees recruited, refugees spurned...Bodies recovered, bodies burned..."
You pause to light a candle. A flame puffs from your clawtip, and you admire your work. Its light washes over the column of numbers and a list of names—
Visions flutter at the back of your memory. Melting faces. Searing flames....
But in that moment, your eyes are firmly fixed on the candle flame. You marvel at how you created it, this small light that chases away the darkness.
It will burn out. They always do. But for now, at least, you can smile.
