Biography

Faolan

Mysterious Gaoler

Hoard
Shroud
Sacridite
Mimic Powder
Black Knight
Iron Treasure Chest
(Testing, quick first draft)

At first glance, most would see this Gaoler as both imposing and intimidating. Faolan has several scars and a broken horn, presumably old injuries from when he served as a Seeker. He likes to mention this to visitors, as he appears out of nowhere or pounces next to them to judge their reactions, and no-one really knows how a massive dragon like Faolan can move so silently. Either it's Shadow magic or natural stealth.

Despite this and his tendency to play pranks on his other clanmates, either replacing items with mimics, setting traps or just creeping up behind them and roaring, Faolan is capable of being serious. Most of the time, he tries to stay positive and supportive around the younger dragons of the clan, and helps them with anything they need when he visits. However, it's an unspoken rule to not ask about his past. He might be willing to mention that he used to be a Seeker, but asking about why he left or even the subject of deities is sure to be met with silence and Faolan avoiding you for the rest of the day.

Only Raiden and Kaela know the truth, and how old Faolan actually is. He's certainly not immortal, but he fits the description of 'ancient dragon' perfectly.

In the times when flight conflicts were wars and ancient dragons still roamed Sornieth, Faolan was hatched in the Tangled Grove to a pack of Seekers. Normally, this would be taboo, but the group had no intention of returning to the Southern Icefield. Faolan’s hatching was tactical, and he would serve as a welcome elemental advantage to the group. He was quickly trained in combat, tracking Shadetouched creatures and fighting any Shadow dragons trying to ambush the group. He was also frequently reminded that being a Seeker was an important duty. After all, who else would rid Sornieth of the Shade? The Icewarden saw the true threat and it was the purpose of all Gaolers to destroy it and capture any other unnatural threats.

Faolan took his job seriously, and always strove to do his best, even if he was inexperienced compared to the other Seekers. The pack soon journeyed into the Sunbeam Ruins, investigating the rumours of a serious Shade infestation in the Hewn City. No dragon had ever been able to banish the unnatural darkness and creatures lurking in the shadows. The Seekers were confident that they would accomplish this.

But, they failed. One by one, the Seekers were hunted down by an unknown threat. After their leader died, the deputy gave the order to retreat, but the Seekers couldn’t escape the city. They ended up hiding underground and sending constant requests for aid to any other Seekers in the area. One Gaoler grew impatient and after pointing out that the group had most likely been abandoned to save on resources, she walked into the shadows to face the threat, and never returned.

Despite this, the remaining members decided to barricade themselves in their hideout, assuring Faolan that help would arrive, and they could wait out whatever was stalking them by hibernating. It would only be for a few weeks. So, Faolan agreed to wait, positive that they would be helped.

When Raiden and Kaela found him, he was barely alive. All of the other Gaolers had already died.

Faolan came to the realisation that his pack had been left for dead. When he tried returning to the Southern Icefield, he was shunned, and told that the records said his group had failed. That the messages had gotten through, but at the time, the Icewarden’s forces had been fighting the Fire flight.
That was how Faolan lost hope in the deities. As he wandered Sornieth, trying to catch up on modern times, what he saw only increased his hate of them. They were distant, and while flight conflicts were less serious, it didn’t change the fact that the deities only cared about expanding their influence, even if most clans wanted peace. Dragonkind was just tools to them.

Faolan of course, kept these thoughts to himself. But in secret, he looks for other dragons like him, and searches for ways to seal powerful creatures or live without being reliant on a deity’s power.

Perhaps one day, the Eleven will fall.

Notes:

-Counted as a clan member, but is nomadic. He roams around Sornieth mostly, staying with the clan for a week or so every month.

-Oddly enough, he collects mimics and knows how to see past their disguises easily. The Night of the Nocturne is one of his favourite times of the year. Faolan sometimes makes use of mimic powder while fighting, by dusting his fur with it or flinging it at his opponent's face to disorient them.

-Best friends with Raiden and Kaela, friendly rivals with Arwyn (tried to trick him into sticking his hand into a mimic's mouth) and tries to support the other younger dragons of the clan. He doesn't exactly get on well with Kira, but he respects her enough to spar with her occasionally, and there are rumours that he funds her research.
