Biography

Domantas

His name means "Gift of Intelligence," and was given to him by parents who were intensely grateful to see their child survive the influence of the Shade that had touched him as an egg. During his schooling there were (many) comments that it was unfortunate his gift couldn't be taken back. Usually these comments were from dragons that had experienced... unfortunate outcomes... when one of Domantas's experiments went awry. (While he might not have managed to turn the Arcanist into a pony, he has demonstrated a solid understanding of the technique.)

After one too many mishaps in experimentation, he was booted from the general vicinity of the Arcanist, and sent to conduct his experiments elsewhere, with any dragon clan that would have him.

While the clan he ultimately joined was known for taking in misfits and outcasts, even they have their limits, mostly defined by "common sense" and "desire to continue breathing." He was told politely but firmly that his experiments were only to be conducted in his laboratory, which was at the peak of one of the nearby Crystalspine mountains, and not anywhere near the clan proper.

Domantas himself is welcome to come to the lair to eat, sleep, and socialize, but given his tendency towards bullheaded pursuit of knowledge, it is more often his familiar, Fahim, who is retrieving the meals for them both. Besides, Domantas gets enough socialization with Rahasyamay, a powerful Fae with an interest in magic and an equally low conception of the concept of "danger" and "bad ideas." The two of them would probably have exploded long ago if not for the calming influence of [name] who is completely unafraid to drug them both into sleep once every two days if they fail to comply on their own.

Rooswoonoodles

An Arcane House Cup Subspecies

If you are unfamiliar with the name “Runesworn”, you may also know it as “the Best House Ever”

Every shadow needs a spectre
Everyone needs a way to disappear
There’s something palpable about the night -
Almost as if it’s not just darkened air

Every shadow needs a shattered spirit
Every dream is desired to come true
But, darling child, you’ve forgot
That nightmares are dreams too

There are cursed spectres dancing in the moonlight
There are drowned spirits hovering in the air
And when you see a manifestion of both -
Yes, House Runesworn is here...

Origins ~ by Nighttyger

Ever since the Arcanist's first, fateful encounter with the Shade, Arcane dragons have always been more susceptible to becoming shadetouched. Perhaps it is due to the Arcane culture of experimentation and exploration, beyond what other flights might call 'reasonable bounds'; or maybe the Shade recognizes something, the essence of that being that once called out to it.

Whatever the reason, Arcane clans have always been particularly cautious of the Shade.

House Runesworn has always been on the forefront of Shade research, though sometimes that research puts dragons into direct contact with the Shade or its energies.

Sometimes, nests end up caught in the crossfire.

It was thought that an egg touched by the Shade would never hatch, the life inside snuffed out in an instant. But a pair of Runesworn scholars, desperate to save their children, began to experiment with the runes they had studied for so long. Runes for binding, runes for growth, runes for protection, willpower, arcane power - if they thought a rune would help, they cast it. They worked so tirelessly with their eggs that they themselves became shadetouched, but they simply cast their runes and continued on, using themselves as living test subjects to determine the best combination of runes.

After many weeks, against all odds, the eggs hatched. The hatchlings' scales glistened black, proof of their contact with the Shade. Their wings bore markings and coloration like those of the dragons who devoted themselves to alchemy, changed on some fundamental level. But all along them glistened bright blue runes of power, keeping them whole, keeping them alive.

They grew up like most any other dragon, playing and learning. With the apparent success of their children, the two scholars began to help other dragons with shadetouched eggs. And though they all bore the marks of their brush with the Shade, they survived, Runesworn on the most fundamental level.

Characteristics ~by MythicalViper

Rooswoonoodles are the quiet, shy type, in contrast to their Spiral breed. They dislike noise and attention unless it is somehow involved with their research. What Spiral traits they have is channeled completely into their experiments. A Rooswoonoodle will relentlessly pursue knowledge until the point of passing out, then wake up and get right back into it. It is advised to stay away from one of those noodles when they’re in their “I’LL SHOW THEM RESEARCH” modes. Unless you have a rock. Then you’re required to knock them out and drag them back to their dorms.

Having been Shadetouched, Rooswoonoodles are capable of wielding great magic, but such dark magic is a drain on their reserves and normally causes them to pass out after a single spell. This doesn’t mean that Rooswoonoodles are fragile, though. They’re still very Spiral. Which means, yes, they can strangle you with their bodies. Not that that’s happened yet (and here we will read “happened” as “been reported”), but still, we’d like to prevent future casualties.

Rooswoonoodles are most eager in their research on the Shade. The entity’s power resides in them, so naturally they are drawn to the entity themselves. This has caused many summoning attempts, which results in the Arcanist using the voice normally reserved for debates against the Stormcatcher and other Runesworn students pitching in to smuggle the Rooswoonoodles across the border to safety, usually via the air vents. There would be a half hour of inactivity, and then, being true Arcanites, they’d attempt it again. Normally in the same location.

[You see a note scribbled here, stamped with the Runesworn Seal]

We would like to remind all students that the Great Hall is not, and should never be, a place to summon the Shade. Better students than you have tried, and they were removed from the remains of their casting circles with a squeegee.

Do not attempt it. Unless you’ve hired a cleaning crew. And if you have the money to hire a cleaning crew, we will be going through your belongings. Thoroughly. For science.

Breed: Spirals are the mascot of Runesworn, representing tireless energy and a relentless pursuit towards a goal. Like all Runesworn students, Rooswoonoodles will not give up until they find the bottom of the truth. Or get an interesting result, preferably one that turns the Arcanist into a pony. Not that we’ve tried that before. At the very least, we’ve yet to succeed.
Divider-640.png
562.png Iridescent/Metallic: Casted with spells designed to prevent Shade magic from devouring them from the inside out, most Rooswoonoodles have the Metallic gene. Their scales are hard and especially resistant against any form of magic, and they are less susceptible to the Shade’s possession. Their cousins with Iridescent are less fortunate. With a body naturally weaker than their Metallic counterparts, they are more vulnerable to all kinds of dark magic…

Divider-640.png
19143.png Spinner and Runes: The wings of a Rooswoonoodle are testament to their interest in alchemy. There’s something about this gene, something about the magic in its patterns that keeps the darkness at bay. The runes on one of those noodles are what keeps them alive. The brighter their runes, the stronger their vital energy. The weaker the runes, the closer they are to having their magic depleted, mental barrier overrun, and being consumed...
