Akane
Blood Mage Her first clan didn't acknowledge her like they did her brother. She didn't know why. Was it because she was a girl? a fae? a blood mage? So she left. It's risky, for sure - she is just one tiny fae, and it is a whole world of danger - but seems a good time to test her skills. She breaks into an archive late one night and searches for information on how to use her magic properly. Finally, in the back of the eighth book on the last shelf, she finds it. She reads hungrily, absorbing the knowledge, when she's interrupted by a latch rattling. The bookkeeper is coming. She panics, rips the chapter free of its binding, and flees. They find the tiny, unconscious fae in the woods. Blood drips from untreated wounds and soaks into the ground around her in an odd pattern. They leave their middle sister to guard the fae and run for their father - he'd be able to help her, or at least carry her to safety. An owlcat watches curiously from behind the trees. "Where am I?" she asks, panicky, when she awakes and finds she is not where she was. "Safe. You were unconscious and wounded. We patched you up." "You what?" she cries. She looks across her wings, at the small, carefully applied bandages, and frets, "Oh, no, no..! This isn't right, not sealed properly - you may have ruined my protection ward!" They glance between themselves, barely a ghost of knowledge among them of what she means. "Clearly it didn't work anyway, considering your state," one suggests, and she only gets more distraught. She keeps pursuing the magic, to the fright of those around her. "You're safe here." "Please, there's no need for this." "Akane, you fool, do not mess with these forces!" She isn't evil. She just wants protection against those forces that would bring her down. And this clan, that has so selflessly taken her in despite fear and reservation… they deserve safety too. For this to work, she needs more. There's not enough blood in her tiny body to protect them all. The owlcat brings her a first dead bird, its blood barely cool in its veins. She does not question, merely thanks them and gets to work. SilverSilver wrote on 2019-05-30:
For Akane:
O bloody bandit, winding the empty halls with palms outspread and bare. The library lays wrecked, pages torn out; the door hangs off its hinges. The sun has frozen in place, and the sanguine blooms push the floorboards aside. What have you done? The streets are barren, the hearth unlit. I see your jewels hanging like bones in the trees, picked clean by the raven and forgotten. How much longer will you recline on the hangman’s throne? She just wanted to help. She just wants to help. All she wanted was to save them, protect them, keep them safe. Not... this. Now here she wanders, through empty caverns and abandoned hallways, weak and alone. The words of the leader, before they all fled, ring awfully in her mind: "Akane, what have you done?" Her constant companion (perhaps her only real friend), the loyal owlcat tries to soothe her, but it cannot be done. She's ruined everything. What has she done? |
