THE AUTUMN DRIFTER
━━━━━◇━━━━━
Every leaf speaks bliss to me,Fluttering from the autumn tree. I shall smile when wreaths of snow Blossom where the rose should grow; I shall sing when night’s decay Ushers in a drearier day. - (Fall Leaves Fall, by Emily Brontë) |
Once a year, Sunbeam Ruins is enveloped in an autumn spirit that blows across to its seasonless counterpart. Browned leaves litter the stone steps of Death Seeker’s Roost. The rain drizzles all day and dyes the landscape with its refreshing scent. The air becomes sharper, cold and crisp. The redwood trees turn to shades of gold, copper, crimson, while the evergreens on the other side remain untouched, sinister green in their ghostly, ashen twilight. The imperial sits on the border, among tea-coloured leaf litter, framed by majestic sunlight streaming through the right trees, shaded by the darkness creeping on his skeletal-patterned hide from the left. His skin glows a subtle hint of emberlike orange, glimpsing to the hues of ruby underneath. The playful breeze kicks up swirling leaves. An autumn dryad rocks to-and-fro on a branch above, peacefully asleep. Hawthorne's mysterious eyes trap the stars. Ethereal, primal runes glow along his eyes and forehead. He would be thought blind, but that simply is not true. The trees whisper their secrets in his ears. The rain sings, the air trembles with the flight of dragons. He rests his head to the soil and listens to the talking bones of ancients. |

Hawthorne is one of the Nightwatch Clan’s watchmen, responsible for keeping tabs on any approaching threats from Sunbeam Ruins. His beautiful eyes are blind. His hearing is divine. It is speculated he can hear beyond the grave, beyond the stars, and can listen out for the Shade’s presence; in remnants, and in dragons. What it sounds like, he refuses to say. He rarely speaks to others, but enjoys his clanmates’ company nonetheless. His age spans into the hundreds. Wise as an owl, sharp-witted as a red fox, what he lacks in youthful vigor is made up for by his knowledge and priceless divination abilities, if you are patient enough to wait with him. Listening to the melodies in the breeze, he is often found sitting outside, sometimes without moving for days. He rarely comes into the castle. He is much like the season he so adores; a weathered; rooted; whimsical relic; one with the earth, sun and heavens alike. He digs up and recollects scattered, disharmonious, long-forgotten bones, to ceremoniously lay their disgruntled spirits to rest. His hoard is full of delicate gossamer-thin pressed flowers. He always smells of nutmeg, candle smoke, and sweet rain. His familiar, an autumn dryad, is fond of naps and flute music. |
