Everyone loved Challin’s gems. The sparkle and glow in the right light was enough to send a dragon swooning. They were expensive, yes, but the quality of the jewels were worth it. Oftentimes a dragon would empty their pockets in order to purchase the tiniest gem Challin had, and the most enthralled ones would sometimes put themselves in debt for the larger ones. Challin did not care for the financial troubles of their customers, though, as money in their pocket was a profit for them.

Challin would spend days off from running his shop, called The Twinkling Eye, deep in the woods. They would shuck off their silks and jewelry for plain breeches and shirt and scour the forest floor for sticks and small logs. You see, Challin’s favorite activity was transmuting sticks into gems. These gems Challin sold in The Twinkling Eye, and some of the smaller ones would have a weak enthrallment cast on them as well. Challin knew what they were doing was unhonest, but quite frankly didn’t care. They wanted comfort and luxury, and so that was what Challin sought.

Sometimes, though, Challin ran across a customer who didn’t buy Challin’s sales pitch. For those customers, Challin led them to a small selection of real jewels to satisfy the dragon. With the jewel in their claws and a magnifying glass in Challin’s, the dragon saw its authenticity and, satisfied, purchased the gem. The Twinkling Eye’s business was slow, but when a customer came in, Challin’s week was set. During the downtime, Challin quietly swept the store or rearranged the displays. They didn’t need much company. Their jewels were all they needed.

____Challin didn’t learn the art of the scam on their own. They watched their mother use the same trick on the automatons in her shop in the Shifting Expanse. She scavenged them from the scrap yards, and once Challin was old enough to leave home on their own, she often sent him on excursions to find scrapped automatons for her. Challin learned the transmutation spell from watching their mother; she would never let them near the spellbook otherwise. The automatons became new and shiny before their eyes. Mother’s magic was intriguing, and Challin wanted to master it.

Challin’s first few tries at the art of the scam were shaky at best. Their transmuted jewels looked plastic and dull. Over time, though, they slowly started to improve. They gradually began to shine and sparkle, and after their mother passed, taking her spellbook with her, began to sell their new jewels in order to take care of themselves. Challin learned a enthrallment spell they could cast to attract customers to gems as well. Like mother, like child after all. The amount of money Challin was making off desert pebbles was staggering. They had a friend paint up a sign for The Twinkling Eye, and has been selling false jewels ever since.

____Once, a customer saw through Challin’s enchantments. They were obviously a powerful dragon, as Challin could feel their magic radiating off them. Challin stood quietly behind the counter as the magician set a gem on its cool surface and stared frostily at the coatl. “Do you know what you’re selling?” the dragon asked. When Challin nodded, the dragon swept the jewel up in their claws and smashed it on the ground. Challin screamed, rounding the counter and kneeling to collect the gravel. The magician shook their head and left. "You are truly pathetic."

Challin watched the door swing shut behind them. Clutching the gravel to their chest, Challin sneered. The magician would smear The Twinkling Eye’s name. They would have to move shop. Challin packed up all their transmuted gems and their sign and fled the Shifting Expanse. They rarely got customers due to the practicality dragons in the Shifting Expanse practiced, anyway. Challin fled to the Windswept Plateau, where the dragons were often distracted by shiny things. In order to prevent another fiasco, Challin began buying real gems to sell as well. Their sales went way up once they reopened The Twinkling Eye.

Trick or Treating prompt, 2019 wrote:
Normally, the display window of Challin's shop was obscenely sparkly with how may jewels were sunning themselves in the open. Depending on the time of day, dragons walked past blindly for how bright they were. But today, Challin had relocated all the jewels to the back of their shop and placed trinkets and treats in their places. Sitting in the window now were lovely bouquets of flowers, precisely cut fruits, feathers, and finely carved sticks. Above them rested a sign that read, "more treats inside."

Inside the shop were the usual gems--Challin couldn't lose all business during this creepy night. However, there were other goodies that they didn't usually sell scattered throughout as well. Bowls of candied bugs and salted cubes of meat were topped with lids to prevent a stink from starting. The shop was decorated, too: stuffed bats hung from the ceiling, garlands of autumnal leaves wrapped around counters and table legs, gourds carved and painted and hollowed out to appear as haunted houses for the small creatures that inhabited the store.

Challin, in all their posh glory, holds out a bowl filled with miscellaneous goodies. "I apologize for the haphazard appearance of my lovely store, but my matriarch thrust this position upon me at the last minute. . . ."
