Biography
The dragon flitted down the dark hallway. Torn, dead lips pulled back over ancient, glistening teeth. It was time to eat. She crept up close to the unsuspecting dragon in front of her, ready for a feast. The first bite pierced the skin, and her teeth loosened the fat from its bones.
Her thoughts (If you can call them that) were simple. Eat. Destroy. Live. Serve. She didn’t know whom she served, at least not yet. She lived for the present, and the present was glorious. The present was home to many tortured souls, her not the least.
She recalled the dragon in front of her, body framed by dust and shattered glass. Cina, was her name. Brilliant blue scales like a butterfly, elegant wings, a voice like honey and silk. She was always kind to... she couldn’t remember her name. Until the end.
She moved on. In the next room, there lied a friend. Alberque. He had destroyed her, so many years ago, and now she would feast. She ripped into his skin, her claws digging deeper until she found what she was looking for. She stashed the bloody object in her pouch, and then feasted. Her... her... master (the word was unfamiliar) wanted it back. Badly.
The dragons in the hotel all lived and died in the present. Moonlight fell on their carcasses like the halo of a saint, and in some ways, they were. Each of them had names, each had hopes, each had secrets. Each met a messy end. One was darkly elegant, and carried the third thing her master needed... The others? They were expendable. She loved that word. Felt like the crunch of bones. Everything was expendable but herself. The gods themselves were expendable. The world was expendable. The void was expendable. The darkness that struck the hearts of dragons at their lowest point was expendable. She would freeze the world in eternal winter to live again.
Dragging her forlorn soul out of the hotel, her eyes flickered left to right, right to left. The moon was high in the sky, and a chill swept the autumn air. Sensing something no-one else could, a puppet under the hands of a capable monster, she flew, or perhaps was dragged, into the night.
Master was unhappy. He struck at her heart, her bleeding eyes, her remnants of the before.
“Fool!” he screamed, “Leave me, beast of burden, reanimi!”
He brought his bone dagger through her heart. It was shocking and yet not painful. She slipped into her past like a bird into its feathers.
What had she done wrong? She brought him blood, she brought him bone, she brought him glass and sinew and rocks and all the things he needed. But there... there was a time when she never killed for the fun of it. There was a time where her mind swirled as lucid water over a Caribbean pool. There was a time... loving mother, helpful mate, intelligent scientist. The memories turned black and swirled like a storm. Lightning struck the once placid waves.
She remembered it all, now. Her son’s death at his sister’s hands. How she flew into madness, and rage, and despair. How the Master helped her...
By taking her soul. And forcing her to kill, to hurt, to change, to destroy. That wasn’t what she wanted, was it?
She stuttered into the room. Master... master was not a “he”. And she needed to die.
“Militiades. Militiades, I see you, “she rasped with an unused voice, the room dark. Her blood flowed freely, but she had life. For now.
She flew at her eldest daughter, talons out. Militiades never saw her coming. She never felt the blast. And she never understood her mother’s last wish.
Wishes are powerful things, when used with enough desperation. And so- the world turned to ice, portraying the last wish of a mother in eternal suffering and snow.
All fairy tales must rot eventually. This world? This world is far from an exception.
