Eben (short for Ebenezer, which never suited him) was born the second son of a wealthy noble family. Their family was made up of extremely gifted Shadow magicians, and Eben's brother was especially talented. To make things worse, Eben's own magical powers never developed until he was well into adulthood, so he always felt like he was everyone's second choice. Even as an adult, he still struggles with feeling inferior and always putting others first. Eventually, he left Shadow, and spent his inheritance just on surviving as he bounced from Flight to Flight. When his magical powers did develop, though, they developed suddenly, and he went from being one of the worst magicians around to one of the most prodigiously talented almost overnight. Always having felt like it was the point of his life to find a family who appreciated him and where he could finally do some good, Eben is now the head of Múspellheimr Hall and spends his days helping teach defensive magic.

Friendly, sensitive, and a little goofy, Eben wears his heart on his sleeve. He's very prone to soaring highs and abyssal lows, and has a bad habit of saying what he thinks when he thinks it. An extremely friendly soul, Eben is loyal to an absolute fault, and it's very rare that he gets into genuine arguments or even has arguments with his friends. He's a true friend to everyone at Home (though he spends most of his time with his boyfriend, Chai, Home's counselor), and is a fantastic dragon to ask for advice because no-one thinks he could lie even if he wanted to. Though he truly does have a heart of gold and a genuine desire to help his family above all else, Eben also tends to be a little spoiled and over-sensitive. Growing up wealthy means he is prone to a bit of complaining and a taste for the fine things in life, though he apologizes to the point of annoyance when he notices himself fall back into old habits. He can be pompous and overbearing, and his relentless good nature can get a bit grating. Eben is absolutely fantastic with hatchlings, but maybe that's just because he can still be a little immature himself. It's easy to accuse him of being oblivious, but it's perhaps more accurate to say he will always believe the best in others, even after he should probably know better. He's a very intelligent dragon, however it's easy to mistake his kind heart for being gullible, naive, or just a little slow on the uptake. His sheer talent as a defensive magician can make his somewhat goofy personality surprising - it's hard to believe the best Shadowstrike wielder around is the same dragon who can only sleep if he has a second pillow to hug and once cried because he "spilled jelly on his fancy pants."

Behind the Name...

Ebenezer is a Hebrew name derived from Eben HaEzer (אבן העזר), meaning 'stone of help.'

Eben is an absolutely fantastic singer.
He loves reptiles, especially small lizards.
He adores shellfish, despite being terribly allergic. It often takes several full-grown colleagues to hold him back from a shellfish platter.
