“Shinepetal,” she replied with a voice of silk. “I only follow the winds and the changing of seasons.” The dragon didn’t respond to the question about where she was from, and no one ever came to learn more about her past. It was not expected that she would stay long with the clan, for as the trees began to lose their leaves Shinepetal appeared more and more uneasy. On the day before autumn began, Ashe lighted upon a branch above her. “Is there anything we can do? It would be wonderful if you could stay.” Shinepetal lifted her eyes to the tiny fae. “My dear, I can only live while the flowers bloom. I draw my life from them. This place was a fine home for me, but I cannot stay.” She looked off into the distance, her eyes fixed on the swirl of dragons flying above the vined trees with a look that might have been longing. “You have all been- very kind to me.” Ashe leaped from her perch, fluttering her wings rapidly in the air. “I know what can be done. Don’t leave yet! Wait right here. Don’t move.” In an instant, she was gone, zipping towards the caves and the dragons within. Hours later she returned, out of breath and with news to deliver. “Shinepetal,” she gasped. “I spoke to Fruitbloom and told him everything. He’s already found what we need.” That evening, Fruitbloom planted a dozen different kinds of roses underneath the tree Shinepetal rested in. “These will never die,” he told her. “Through the frosts and the heat of summer, these flowers will stay in bloom. If you are willing to stay, we would welcome you here.” Shinepetal smiled at him, warm as spring. “Thank you. I would love to stay.” ________________________________________ |

Shinepetal does not age. Ever since she started absorbing energy from the roses that never die, she too became immortal. Shinepetal outlived all of her friends and even her mate, Rainwing. She stayed in her old clan until the last of her friends wilted away. Shinepetal tried to remain in her old home, but the memories became too painful and the silence too profound. So, Shinepetal gathered up as many of her roses as she could, fashioned them into wearable clothing, and moved away.
Shinepetal traveled for a long time. The thought of finding another family only to lose them again was far too painful, and thus she returned to her solitary life. That is, until she started to hear rumors floating in the breeze. These rumors spoke of another dragon like her, a dragon that lived off of the energies of flowers and traveled with the seasons like she once did. It appeared that she was not the only dragon of her kind after all. She followed the rumors and ended up in Theila's territory, the last known location of this mysterious dragon.
This is where she met Madrasa, who was napping among Dante's roses. They bonded quickly over their shared fate and found comfort in the other's company. She decided to plant some of her eternal roses in Dante's garden and stay with Madrasa. Madrasa also became immortal as he was gifted with the powers of Shinepetal's roses. Eventually, Shinepetal found love once again.
Dante's rose garden became something of a refuge for the immortal skydancers. Word of their existence continued to spread upon the wings of Shalia's teahouse guests. Some even came to the teahouse in hopes of catching a glimpse of the two. Before long, the family of floral dancers grew as Thorne and Florence arrived. They too sought out refuge and the chance of a permanent home. They too grew weary of the constant search for the life giving essence of blooms. And they too found comfort in Shinepetal's presence.
