Scattered papers
by the fantastic Tues
xxxxxxxThis is the first time Mirena regrets giving Laila a key to her office. The door stands ajar, and papers lie strewn across the floor in front of her desk. From the threshold, they look like pages from one of Mirena’s ledgers, torn out piece by piece and left to rot. And spotting the ledger’s binding underneath Laila’s head like a pillow, she knows they must be. xxxxxxx– Darling, – Mirena whispers, nudging her sleeping girlfriend’s shoulder. – I like to talk about what you’ve done to my office. Now. – And oh, she tries to keep the frustration out of her voice, but it surfaces nonetheless, terse and simmering. xxxxxxxIt’s not as if Laila is ignorant to the time and effort spent on the Navigator Guild’s ledgers, to the years Mirena has labored over its intricate, deeply customized features. Whatever she has torn the office apart for, it had better be important. xxxxxxxAnd it must be, judging from the tear tracks snaking down her cheeks, the puffy redness round her eyes. Laila lifts her head blearily, and in the first moment she lays eyes on Mirena, she softens. Her shoulders drop and a faint sigh escapes. xxxxxxxThen the fury sets in, sharp as a storm, and whatever tenderness she has held out of habit washes away. xxxxxxx– My father was a part of the guild, – she croaks, wiping the corners of her eyes. Tears well up all the same, and when Mirena reaches out to thumb them away, Laila swats her hand down with a snarl. – He was a part of this guild, and you were writing his checks! xxxxxxx– Dear, I write a lot of checks— xxxxxxx– Don’t dear me right now, Mirena! – Laila pulls herself upright, pushing Mirena’s chair backward with enough force to scratch the floors. Snatching a fistfull of papers from the desk, she waves them in Mirena’s face. – You know what this contract is for. Deities, I have told you everything about my father, about my mother, and you already knew! But you didn’t tell me. xxxxxxxHere Laila’s voice breaks, and it is all Mirena can do not to sweep her love up in her arms. If she cannot wipe away Laila’s tears, then she knows better than to pull Laila into a hug right now. Especially not when all she can do is admit the truth. xxxxxxxAs the Navigator Guild’s treasurer, it’s her job to dole out payment for jobs well done. Her connection to Captain Rashir is entirely professional, not a personal facet to be seen, and when she first learned of Laila’s heritage, she’d said nothing for that reason. Why stir up silt when their love could sail forward on clear waters? xxxxxxxMaybe she should have, though. If she had, Laila wouldn’t be tearing through her office, her trust in Mirena crumbling with every entry in the ledger. xxxxxxxEither way, it doesn’t make it any easier to watch Laila’s shoulders shake with rage, with grief. It’s the watching that makes her heart flutter and ache like sails caught in the wind, and she’s helpless to stop it. This love isn’t a sail she can cut free, not willingly. xxxxxxxLaila has cut sails before, though. She’s done it to survive, and she lost everything in the process, so it stands to reason that she can do it again. xxxxxxx– I’m leaving the guild, – she grits out from between clenched teeth. – My mother was more important than cargo. She was more important than any price you could ever record. xxxxxxx– I don’t disagree, – Mirena replies, – but I’ve just been doing my job. xxxxxxxLaila doesn’t say goodbye, and Mirena can’t muster a farewell in return. There’s only the slam of Mirena’s office door between them and the weak flutter of parchment on the floor. xxxxxxxApparently, that wasn’t the right thing to say, and for the first time in many, many years, Mirena dreads another night spent sleeping under her desk. This office will never be the same, even if she pieces her ledgers back together. Something of Laila will always remain. xxxxxxxAnd Mirena cannot shake the thought that it’s her fault Laila left at all. | x |
