Starshine
"I worry so much for you."
  • The dark is spreading, and it’s stuck to your hide, dug in so deeply that no amount of magicking will be able to get it off. The best you can do is conceal it, and pray no one else notices.
You find the cloak deep in a now-dead lair, in what might have been a wizard’s storeroom. The cloth still shines, even in darkness, and you’re grateful for that. It helps cover up the corruption creeping over your scales, and if you squint through the star-strewn cloth, you can pretend you’re instead shining with the light of a distant galaxy, a billion other worlds much better and brighter than this one.

  • Some days the fear threatens to overwhelm you, and you just want to lie down and weep. Before the tears can fall, you reach into different realities, into tales and songs of valor. The music may no longer come to you, but the words do, and you shut your eyes as you ride them high, yelling in stentorian timbres, drowning out the madness lurking without and within.
  • Keeping a blade sharp is easy; keeping the mind sharp, less so. Even when your feet are at rest, your front paws stay agile, scooping up old game pieces. A crudely drawn map becomes a battlefield as you set up miniature fields and forests and fortresses. From there, you consider strategies, plans of attack and defense—
A challenge by a lairmate? You welcome them all, and you don’t go easy on any of them, not even on her. You defend your side as best as you are able, and you can pretend that it really is just a game....

  • Those of the dead that do lie where they have fallen eventually wither away, leaving behind only armor and adornments. Everyone is the same in death, nothing but bones that eventually crumble and become one with the soil. Every battlefield, eventually, becomes a mass grave, all the remains mixed in together, with naught to tell them apart.
The ornaments you wear now seem to whisper in your ears as you stride along, each chiming note a syllable of your name. Reassuring you that should you fall, should your star-strewn hide be stripped away, your name will still be recognized, in the jewels and adornments tangled around your bones.

  • The buddy system—it sounds so tawdry, especially considering the last two who patrolled alone disappeared into the night. They left only smears of blood and the echoes of desperate shrieks.
You welcome company now, all the time, but most especially if it’s her. It’s good to have someone to watch your back. Good to have someone defend you. Good to have someone to lean on.
Good to be able to feel less alone.
