When traveling through the strange lands of the Arcanist, one is never truly safe, and it is a common expression amongst the frequent adventurers to expect the unexpected. Looking for the signs of a rift in time or space created by grand magic experiments gone horribly wrong is a common technique taught to anyone planning to venture far from home in the deepest parts of the Arcanist's territory. Even so, the true nuances of the practice go unrealized by most. While they (luckily) don't often pose much of a threat, certain areas of higher chaotic magical energy tend to suck even the most wary of travelers into their grasps and transport them to different places or even times, leaving the traveler confused, disoriented, and ultimately, far from any semblance of home. The land that the clan of Astraia settled on happened to be one of these places, although this was not realized by the founders for quite some time, since not much was known of time travel amongst their members. That being said, the magical activity of the land did not go unnoticed by others, and many odd creatures and beings flocked to the rifts and ever-shifting magical haze, Aroshi being one of the most powerful (or perhaps, simply one of the most determined to stay). As such, she became an unseen staple of the land, watching over the mortal residents out of sheer curiosity. She had always been rather enthralled by mortal life, wishing to understand what made their trivial delights and sorrows so important to be worth spending a lifetime on. Immortal creatures needn't worry for time, after all. She could comfortably watch the clan for centuries— eons, even, if she so desired—and still have an infinity stretching before her. There was no loss through devotion for her, and yet, for mortals, there was everything to be lost. It was fascinating to witness, she thought, their toils. Not to mention, the land in which they had settled was perfect for dragon-watching. While it was certainly possible for Aroshi to cause her own rifts in time, it still took a great deal of energy. Being able to use the natural landscapes carved by much more powerful beings than herself made her hobby much more effortless. She could hop centuries in a blink, chase after a traveler with delicate hops, and replay the story over and over, much to her delight. Eventually, despite all this, Aroshi grew rather tired of simply watching; she wanted someone to share her discoveries with. And so, a new threat in the deep woods of the Arcanist's land was created: Aroshi, the storyteller. She would descend from the shadows, emerging as a barely corporeal form that spoke of tales fantastical, effortless travel through time, and secrets that the average dragon could barely even imagine. The unsuspecting traveler would be guided into a whirlwind of time travel quick as a whip, and Aroshi would talk for as long as she could convince anyone to stay with promises of more incredible adventures. While meaning no harm, her excitement and overbearing presence would sometimes override most logic, and as such, simple, quick trips through time with random mortal travelers would turn into much longer ventures, and those she captured would often return to their time years older, much of their life wasted in Aroshi's eager clutches. Soon, new tales sprouted up amongst adventurers surrounding the odd time rifts in the Arcanist's land. Beware the glowing lady of the mist that clutches an hourglass in bony hands; if you leave with her, you may never return. |
