Biography
Cleo watched from her perch atop a smoldering pine as the world burned around her. The roaring flames flowed over the landscape ironically like water and consumed the life in their path. The animals in this forest were too quick-witted to be consumed by such a flame. They had sensed the prairie growing dryer and dryer over the past few months, and when a lightning storm had formed on the horizon hours ago, they hurriedly fled for safety, knowing a single stroke of lightning would set the parched land aflame.
Cleo spread her wings, fanning the flame slightly, encouraging it to burn hotter, brighter. If she could have felt heat, Cleo would have felt the most intense heat of her life. In fact, no other mortal dragon would’ve been able to be as close to the flame as she was and escape unscathed. But Cleo had been born in the heart of a fire, and from that moment on, she would be forever immune from its touch...
...
Although technically the Fae was from Shadow flight, her egg had been abandoned when a large wildfire such as the one she was watching now had torn through her birth clans territory. In her clan’s panic to flee the flames, Cleo’s egg had fallen to the ground and was left behind, presumably to die. Perhaps it was her destiny, or just some strange twist of fate, but Cleo’s egg was not consumed by the flames. Instead, it seemed to draw them into itself, like a vacuum, until suddenly… CRACK!
The little fae had emerged into an inferno and since it was the first thing she saw, she was not afraid. Mesmerized by the beauty of the dancing flames, she watched them leap and flicker wildly, until high above, she heard the sound of wings flapping and a female Pearlcatcher descended into the flames in front of her.
Firebird, the female Pearlcatcher, was the source of this particular fire, and she had seen Cleo hatch from the air while surveying her handiwork. The adult female looked deeply into the hatchling’s eyes, saw that she felt no fear, was immune to the flame, and decided she had been sent to her by some unseen force. Firebird had never wanted any offspring of her own, but technically Cleo wasn’t. She was just… a kindred spirit….
…
A shadow passed over Cleo’s head as she continued fanning the wildfire, and she looked up to see Firebird soaring overhead. The Pearlcatcher dove steeply towards the fae, leveled out, and flew past Cleo’s flank, casting her a wicked grin before diving headfirst into the inferno she had summoned. Cleo chuckled softly in response, amused by her clanmates theatrics, a sly smirk upon her lips.
