Thunder rumbled overhead, pouring down sharp, icy water onto the world below. Streaks of lightning flashed in the sky, temporarily illuminating two dragons huddled together in a rocky alcove. Nearly identical, the dark and light blue coatls flinched as another loud roar echoed, immediately followed by slashes of harsh lightning. The storm wasn’t only close, the storm was directly above them.

The coatls, Fiachna and Fiachra, pressed as far as they could into the small crevice of a large boulder. They curled up, squished between each other and stone. The rock provided just enough cover to keep them out of the storm, but it was still damp and cold and miserable.

Fiachna and Fiachra were slowly trekking to the Behemoth. Both on the run from their clans and blindly wandering through Sornieth with little hope, they flew into each other while crossing the Sea a few weeks ago, crashing into a nearby island. Scared and alone, they decided to band together.

The water dragons of the island suggested that the two head to the Sunbeam Ruins, and continue north to the Behemoth. It was said that the vast forests, woods, and gardens surrounding this tree were the safest places in Sornieth, filled with life and growth. But instead of reaching the domain of the Lightweaver, the two had found themselves on the edge of the Carrion Canyon. Long dead skeletons littered the ground beneath the everlasting thunderstorm. No flora or fauna was to be seen. Only bleak land and skies for miles.

“Is it morning yet?” Fiachna asked between crashes, voice wavering. They must’ve been here for days, traveling during the mornings when the storms seemed to quiet slightly. Telling the time of day was near impossible though, telling which direction they were going in was even more so. The clouds and rain never truly let up. Flying was difficult, neither dared try.

“I’m not sure,” Fiachra answered, “I don’t even know how long we’ve been here.” With a shiver, she pulled Fiachna closer, keeping the other tucked snugly under her wing.

Time seemed to stand still here. Always storming, always dark, always more bones. Nothing changed. It was almost as if the spirits were taunting them, testing to see how far they were willing to go, luring them to go even further. Neither was sure how far the canyon went on for, nor how deep it fell into the depths of Sornieth. They had stayed far from the edge.

Fear was seeping into both of their hearts. Fear that maybe they were trapped, maybe they’d never escape. Maybe they’d end with the same unfortunate fate as the endless bones scattered around them. But unlike so many others, they wouldn’t be missed. “We should rest,” Fiachra decided eventually, “I don’t think we’ll be able to move for a while.”

Fiachna nodded wordlessly, the cold weariness in her bones felt too heavy, as if she was being pulled into the stone beneath her. Laying her head on Fiachra’s shoulder, she closed her eyes.

They lay in silence for a while, unable to sleep. Both of them were soaking wet and shivering, despite their body warmth against each other. Just as Fiachna considered giving up on resting, as she had many nights recently, the rushing and roaring sounds of rain slowly muffled out, replaced with a comforting silence. She peeled open her eyes slightly

It was as if she was floating in the night sky, sleeping amongst the stars. A glowing orange fox sat calmly in front of her. Scrambling to her feet, Fiachna stared in awe at the animal. Before she could speak, the fox turned, whisking their tail, telling her to follow.

Taking a few timid steps, Fiachna slowly padded after the fox. They stopped a minute later. The fox sat down, tilting their head downwards as Fiachna followed their gaze. Below them, through the sky and stars, was Fiachra and Fiachna, on an island in the Sea.

“That’s us.” Fiachna said, leaning closer. This was shortly after they met, they had stopped to rest on a warm, sandy island, and ended up building a sandcastle. “I remember that. We got so much sand in our wings.”

Suddenly, the image faded, and the fox was on the move again. Fiachna, now intrigued, quickly followed.

Every minute or so, the two paused to watch a moment from Fiachna’s trip with Fiachra. The time they went went fishing for squids, when they saw a dolphin family while swimming, having a sandball fight, climbing a tree, talking about the constellations they loved but couldn’t see. Amidst the struggles of their journey, she realized she’d overlooked the many smiles they’d shared.

Turning, the fox peered at her curiously, as if asking what she was thinking. A cold breeze appeared, prickling her feathers, as the fox started to fade.

Rain pounding the cold stone threw Fiachna back into the waking world. Her eyes shot open and her head jerked up. Fiachra was still asleep, her wing still draped over around the other. As expected, the rain had lessened, if only marginally and for a few hours. The chilly air blew into Fiachna’s face. But there was a newfound warmth protecting her.

She could’ve sworn she heard the wind whispering “you’re home.” Maybe it was just her imagination.
