Biography
After his mother's gentle prodding, Erosyr began spending more time with Veralice. She was a very pretty Pearlcatcher, and he had been too shy to approach her before. With his mother's encouragement, he was more willing to at least try.
Veralice was receptive to him, and tended to push his boundaries. To his surprise, she seemed intent on pursuing him romantically. Why? Surely she was destined for a diplomatic marriage? Despite his confusion, he didn't resist her advances. Even if it was doomed to be short-lived, he wanted to be with her. The whole clan knew about them before long.
His mother was surprisingly unhappy with his romance. She told him that he should have taken things slower, that it was peculiar to be so bold so soon. He insisted that he hadn't done anything out of turn, but she wasn't having any of it.
Verusha did not stand between him and Veralice. She seemed to tacitly accept a potential union between them, despite the loss of a potential alliance with another clan. Verusha wasn't technically Drakel's leader anyway, so Veralice insisted that she was of limited diplomatic value. Erosyr was doubtful that this resolution came about as peacefully as Veralice claimed, but he wasn't one to argue.
Hestrine, the clan's leader, fell ill not long after Veralice laid their first nest. Despite Seryndrile's efforts, Hestrine's condition worsened and she eventually died. Erosyr was horrified when his mother suggested that the death could have been poison, casting suspicion on Verusha. Seryndrile confirmed that poison was in Hestrine's system, but Verusha couldn't have been the culprit. She hadn't been alone with Hestrine since the leader was brought into Seryndrile's care. Of those that had, Agarru and Veralice both had motives. Erosyr couldn't imagine either of them doing it, though. Agarru had been very open about his intentions for the position as clan leader- too open to resort to such methods. Besides, he was no stranger to challenging. And Veralice... she would never do something like that! With Seryndrile's confirmation, the clan wanted someone to answer for their leader's death.
Saerfir kept asking him if he was really sure Veralice couldn't have poisoned Hestrine. They knew she had access. And her family was known for their ambition. It would open a lot of doors for her if Hestrine happened to disappear. Erosyr knew these things were true, but he couldn't believe she would use poison. She would be leader one day because she was the best for the job. She wouldn't cheat. But his mother wouldn't let it go. She kept asking, and he tried to assure her as best he could, but it seemed like she couldn't talk about anything else. Finally, she told him that if he was really sure about that, he should try to convince the clan.
He did not. He didn't think he needed to. She obviously wasn't guilty, it was self-evident. If he made a fuss it would just cause a scene, and he wasn't great in the spotlight on a good day. His mother kept on him about it, but most of his clanmates didn't seem to think Veralice had done it, so he figured she was just being a bit overprotective. Veralice thought differently, though. She thought his mother's concern was a bit suspicious. Why didn't Saerfir ever want to talk to her about this issue she's 'so worried' about? Erosyr didn't quite understand what she was getting at, but he assured her nonetheless that his mother was just like that sometimes. Veralice told him she thought his mother had poisoned Hestrine. Erosyr didn't believe she would do that. She wasn't evil.
His father ended up implicating himself by turning over some empty water jugs he'd brought to Seryndrile during that period. Erosyr knew his father would never hurt Hestrine- they'd been close for a long time. His mother, however, seemed to resign herself to the idea. Perhaps he'd been more bitter about Hestrine allegedly cheating on him than he'd let on, and decided to get revenge. She was even telling people that he'd been getting angry more often lately, perhaps she should have seen it coming? Erosyr was confused. He knew she was lying. Why would she make his father look guilty when he wasn't?
Investigations found a bottle of poison hidden within Bal's bedding, but it had clearly been cleaned. Probably to strip his scent off. Aerwen offered to use a spell to unearth the scrubbed scents, and it revealed Saerfir had handled the bottle. She was questioned, and ultimately found guilty of murdering Hestrine. She was killed for her crimes.
Bal left the clan not long after. There was nothing but bad memories in Drakel, he said. He couldn't see his life there without seeing how Saerfir had deceived him. She had separated him from Hestrine. She made him believe she loved him. And she had tried to frame him. Had she been plotting this all along? He never said it, but Erosyr knew it was hard for his father to look at him without seeing her.
Erosyr wondered how she could do it. Had she really never cared about father? Had she ever cared about him?
