The peony is a flowering plant in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the family Paeoniaceae. They are native to Asia, Southern Europe and Western North America. It is also known as 富貴花 (fùguìhuā) "flower of riches and honour" or 花王 (huawang) "king of the flowers", and is used symbolically in Chinese art. Mischievous nymphs were said to hide in the petals of the Peony, giving it the meaning of Shame or Bashfulness in the Language of Flowers.

Hailing from the cold endless winters of the ice domain, Peony is fascinated by flowers and other plants but has trouble understanding how they work. She has been attempting to develop ice magic that could freeze and preserve flowers, but so far all efforts have ended in failure. Her favorite plant is holly, for its hardiness and surviving the icy winters. She kind to those she meets and enjoys doting on her only son to stay in the clan, Amaranth. However, if someone upsets Amaranth or if she hears anything of her other children being troubled, the culprit will find she can be a terrifying force to be reckoned with.
