He doesn’t fault his mothers for the way he has always faded into the background, his own presence eclipsed by the surprisingly dark shadow his absent brother casts. Slipping away, there but not there, has always been his way of coping with the way they watch him - no doubt seeing echoes of his brother in his face - or the way they hold him - tight, so tight, and he knows it is from love but it’s choking, the way they can’t seem to let him go.

Having come into his full power it is much easier. That tense closeness builds, and builds, and then he can release it - and his body twists and curls, gaseous, half-invisible. He can’t be held, but he can be there, a soft mist that surrounds like a cool blanket. And like that, he can also slip away.

Along his way he leaves assurances - beading cool dewdrops on his mama’s flowers, a farewell brush against mother’s hand - that he will return. They understand, more and more, why he goes, but not all of it. Their disappointment would be too great if he failed in his solemn, self-appointed quest to slip between worlds to find where his brother has been lost. So he goes, and he returns, and yet he is never entirely there at all.
