Magic is, and will always be somewhat unpredictable. Even the most talented mages, who’s spells and rituals always seem to do what they’re supposed to do- know that and make sure they have a plan b in case something goes wrong or differently from what was planned. Magic can be studied, practiced and mastered, but never fully controlled. Perhaps that’s for the best too- even those who CLAIM to have absolute control cannot fully grasp what magic really is, where it comes from and why it is the way it is.
And yet, every day dragons learn more and more about magic, though the full extend of just what it is capable of will probably never be fully understood and accepted.
Grey is perhaps proof of that.
Once, a group of researchers tried to collect magic- shape it, compress it into something small. They wanted a weapon, something small enough that even a fae could carry it around with ease, but with powers equal to that of an emperor. They had been tasked to create it, and while most were dilligently working on it, some were wary- magic had a habit of lashing out unexpectedly, and with how much power they planned to give it….
The process of gathering magical energies and containing it was apparently simple in theory, but in practice it was far more complicated. Maybe it was the years that went by since the initial ‘gathering’, or something intentionally destroying everything relating to the project, but how exactly the researchers managed to do it is a mystery that will never be solved. All that’s known is that they succeeded, and created something small yet lethal.
However, with how unpredictable magic can be, it’s no surprise that something happened that no-one had even thought possible:
The magic became conscious, self-aware and very, very unstable.
No one really know how the reseach ended, but with how everything and everyone involved with the project ended up ‘vanishing’, it’s safe to say it didn’t end well for anyone involved.
