__ETTRA__

“I will not hide my tastes or aversions. I will so trust that what is deep is holy, that I will do strongly before the sun and moon whatever only rejoices me, and the heart appoints.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

There’s an old legend that talks about magical fairies living in the forest.

Ettra didn’t believe in that nonsense though. What he did believe in was the power of rocks. One rock, two rocks, three rocks -- the more rocks you had, the more magical you can be! Or so Ettra believed. Who needs secret magical fairies in the forest when you have rocks?

The Skydancer giggled mischievously as he picked up another pebble on his way home. This one had a surface that was smooth as silk. It was light, but not too light in the palm of his clawed hands. A good weight, he decided. Another giggle escaped him as he noticed how the sunlight brought out streaks of gold and silver in his shiny new pebble. He stumbled unexpectedly as a dragon impatiently pushed past him to continue down the road. Oops. Sometimes Ettra would get so caught up in his rocks he forgot his space in the real world too. ”Sorry!” he shouted after the dragon, who was already far ahead of him.

It should take him only a few minutes to walk back to his den, but today (like all the other days) there were too many distractions on the road home. The sun was touching the horizon, painting the sky in wonderful pinks and oranges, by the time Ettra opened the door to his humble abode. He tossed his day pack haphazardly onto the lone chair in front of the fireplace, but not before he carefully extracted his handful of treasure. Rocks, rocks, rocks.

His home was simple. Only the bare necessities. A fireplace, a rug who had seen much better days, a single chair, a table and a bed. In fact, his kitchen was sparsely used and even more sparsely furnished than the rest of his home. Cooking took time -- valuable time when he could either be gathering more rocks or…. well, gathering more rocks -- so it never crossed Ettra’s mind that he could cook his insects and veggies. Salads suited him just fine. And bugs? Well, it was better to just get that over with quickly.

Though most would consider his living room and kitchen wanting, the room at the back of the den could be called a treasure trove. This is where Ettra spent most of his time, so it follows that it would be the most homely. He called this space the Alcove, for no reason other than that he enjoyed the way the word formed in his mouth. Sometimes he’d repeat it a few times, just to say it. You don’t always need a reason to say words, he believed. Sometimes you can say them just for fun.

Shelves and chests filled all the empty spaces in the Alcove. There were no chairs, for there was no space for chairs, so the chests served a dual purpose of storage and seating (and sometimes, as ladders too). Rocks filled every nook and cranny of this space. Big rocks, small rocks, dull rocks, bright rocks -- all the rocks that had ever caught Ettra’s eye (and that he could carry) ended up in the Alcove. He did not realize (and wouldn’t care much even if he did know) that he had amassed a veritable fortune in this room. Gold and gems are rocks too. you know.

Ettra deftly clambered over a few chests, careful not to knock over the attentively placed piles around the trunks. Gripping shelves for support, the Skydancer began sorting his new find. This rock goes into this chest. That rock goes on a shelf. And hmm, this rock should go on the other shelf high to the right and high above the chests. Each rock was reverently placed in its new home by a process only Ettra could understand. The special rock, the small satin pebble with gold and silver striations, he saved for last. This one, he decided, would sleep on the window sill near his bed. That way he could always watch the sunlight (or moonlight) dance along its surface, catching its gilded rivers and lustrous streams. Surely this pebble would bring him only good dreams.

And so the Skydancer lived his days, gathering rocks on his way home and sleeping beside his variegated pebble. Were the rocks actually magical? Ettra could never be sure, but they did bring him immeasurable happiness -- and that was magic enough for him.
