Ornes could not take his gaze of his mother’s face. For the first time in ages, delight glistered in her eyes. A smile flitted across his face. With his snout, he nudged her shoulder slightly. “I have a crazy idea”, he said softly, smiling at Faraille. “Why don’t we just stay?”
Personality
|
Ornes is a stubborn and proud dragon. When he set his mind on something, it is almost impossible to make him change his ways. He knows his way around other dragons and is adaptable when it comes to social contact. This makes him well-liked in the lair. To him, every life is precious, even that of the enemies. He will fight when threatened, but he refuses to kill unless there is no other way. He will also treat any injuries or sicknesses he encounters, even if that means healing a foe. He will not allow anyone to throw away the gift of life. While Ornes has no children of his own, he brings eggs and hatchlings into the lair. He raises them himself, unless some other dragon is fond of the egg or hatchling and takes them under their wing. |
Background

Ornes was born as the only son of Faraille and Merlot. When he had just grown into adulthood, his father fell sick with a severe disease. Both Ornes and his mother suffered greatly from seeing their father and mate fading away. However, Ornes refused to let his father leave without trying his all to save him. He started his apprenticeship as a healer. Determined and focused, he soon was able to treat Merlot’s pain… but not to save his life. When his father died, Ornes soon realized he had to watch out for his mother. He put his own sorrow aside and instead made sure Faraille did not lose all hope. Together they left the lair, searching for a new home far away from the old memories. On his travels, Ornes took any chance he had to foster and expand his knowledge on healing, plants, and alchemy. Being a clever dragon, he soon had a great understanding for the dragon body and the flora of different parts of Sornieth. One day, they came across a small lair of dragons on Starwood Strand. Ornes immediately was intrigued by the story Alaysa told him, about a mysterious sickness a coatl had accused her to have. While he wanted to stay and help out, he was unsure about Faraille’s plans. When he and his mother visited the inner parts of the lair’s caves though, filled with crystals and geodes, and he saw his mother’s glistering eyes, he knew what he had to do. No other dragons know that Ornes was the one to convince his mother to take the cave as her new charge and to start a new life on Starwood Strand. |

When Ornes first met Monde, the Pearlcatcher tried to attack him to defend his sister Lune. Ornes was intimidated by the hot-headed dragon, though he would never admit that. In fact, he had his doubts bringing the two Pearlcatchers to the Rose Spar, but he knew they needed help. All the more Ornes was surprised how well Monde fit into the clan. The strength and willpower of Monde kept dragging Ornes back to him, but Ornes also felt that the Pearlcatcher sometimes played stronger than he was. Ornes soon noticed that his romantic interest was returned by Monde, but that Monde was again trying to hide this "weakness". It amused the Skydancer, who decided to wait with his confession to see whether Monde would get out of his shell. And indeed he did. |

Ornes and his mother have a very deep and loving relationship. The sickness and death of Merlot, and Faraille's following depression brought them close together. Even though Faraille is doing better, Ornes is still very worried about her. Whenever he notices she is isolating herself, he tries to keep her company or asks Auriga to do so. |

It took Ornes by surprise his mother adopted Auriga this quickly, but it lifted a huge weight of his shoulders. He adores the Spiral and would do anything for her. Even though he often rebukes her for her sarcasm, one can see his eyes sparking with pride when she shows off her wits and her clever mind in her own, sarcastic manner. |

Ornes enjoys Lune's company a lot. While he does not understand most of the things she is talking about (and she doesn't understand him either), he has a good time listening to her tinkerer plans. Together, they designed her wing prosthesis, which is strong enough to help her glide for short distances. Ornes also relies on her to understand Monde, because sometimes, even he is lost. |

After being unable to find Estellaria's parents, Ornes adopted her as her care-taker. Because he himself is a studious and focused dragon, he often struggles with understanding Estellaria's scattered mind. He tries to teach her how to stay on track, but his efforts seem to be of little success. He still cares deeply for Estellaria and hopes he can support her the way she needs it. |

Again and again, Ornes is impressed by Shirogane’s sagacity. Nothing seems to throw the other off and he always has a plan for any unforeseen situation. Ornes admires him for his foresight and calmness, being able to keep a cool head no matter what. Other dragons in the lair claim Shirogane to be cold-hearted, but Ornes is convinced that without Shirogane’s pragmatic mind, things would go downhill very quickly. |
