Amadeus

Amadeus has a knack for all things related to problem-solving. His logical approach to life has made him an excellent student—a quality which his father, Lucas, is incredibly proud of—and a kind, thoughtful young dragon. Eager to please, Amadeus struggles with the concept that not everyone has good intentions. A couple of unfortunate encounters during his adventures as a hatchling managed to knock that trait out of him… mostly. Though much wiser now, and certainly intelligent far beyond the capacity of most dragons his age, he still maintains a rather naive attitude.

Amadeus is determined to bring out the best in those around him. He refuses to use his magic for anything except good deeds. That being said, his thirst for knowledge is a powerful motivator when it comes to his research, along with the gentle encouragements of his parents. Quiet and withdrawn, though not shy, he is slightly afraid of his power. Or rather, what it could do to someone. His lessons have not covered aggressive techniques and his abilities are certainly not but in a fight-or-flight situation, his protective instincts tend to kick in and he is scared of what might happen. Who knows what catastrophe might occur if he somehow lost control of his magic? Due to this fear he actively avoids conflict and would much rather study quietly.

When he isn’t curled up with a spellbook or practising magic in a quiet corner of the Starfall Isles, Amadeus finds a strange joy in playing with hatchlings and teaching them what he believes to be valuable lessons. Though barely matured himself, their minds are far more carefree and unrestricted than his own. Their wild imaginations inspire him to be more confident and relaxed. In turn, Amadeus’ calm presence seems to help balance the hatchling’s untameable energy, much to their parents’ relief.

Amadeus flipped through his book. Written inside in careful, neat handwriting were the many spells, learning points and stepping stones across his time of learning magic. Stopping at a blank page, he smoothed it. Dipping his pen into ink, he began writing.

Today, I managed to practice my magic on the isles. Father said that he and Mother used to go there to practice as well. Since my instrument is different from theirs, I need to learn more and learn differently to master my magic! Father says that my instrument is surely different and unique.

Setting down his pen, he stared into the candle, watching its flame wave back and forth. The magic that ran in his veins, the magic that his family was renowned for was just like a candle flame, burning with passion and power, yet having the steady rhythm and beat of music.

A click sounded behind him, and he turned to see his father, Lucas, stepping into his room. The older Fae’s skin glowed with the light of stars, mirrored on Amadeus’s scales, and he was beaming at seeing Amadeus hard at work.

“Done practising for today?” Lucas asked, sitting down beside his son.

“Yes,” Amadeus nodded, a grin spreading across his face. “You should have seen it, no one has ever seen more Fallen Streaks circling the Isles before I practised my magic today. It was amazing!”

Lucas nodded thoughtfully in approval. “I think you’re making good progress. Tell you what, when your mom and I go to the Observatory tomorrow, you can come with us.”

Amadeus was barely able to contain his elation. His parents were only invited to the Observatory maybe once or twice each season, because of their magic and prowess, and they helped the scholars document the musical magic aspect of their studies. And now, he, Amadeus, their son, could go with them!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Amadeus waited outside the Observatory with his parents, flapping his wings harder than usual due to his excitement and nervousness. His magic, although still musical, was different from his parents’. His mother, Varia, said that he was blessed with more magic when he hatched from his egg, thus he had a unique and special form of musical magic.

A scholar opened the doors for them and ushered them inside. Amadeus followed his parents, looking around at the curving walls and towering telescopes with awe. They entered a room set in the side of the slanted wall, a room covered with the sweet magenta of Arcane and humming with magical energy.

The scholar at the desk, a female Fae named Blue, stood up to greet the family. Lucas and Varia set down their instruments on the table for Blue to inspect, and Blue’s deep pink eyes widened when she saw Amadeus.

“Is he…?” Blue asked.

“Yes, he’s our son, the one I’ve told you about,” Lucas answered, a hint of pride in his tone. Amadeus shifted anxiously and wondered what about him his father had told this scholar. “I believe his powers are strong now.”

Blue nodded her head in interest. “Okay, let’s take him down to the menagerie and see how the familiars respond to his music. Come on.”

Amadeus followed the Fae down the stairs to an open area where there were many many Fallen Streaks, Jewelled Octoflyers, Petal Jumpers… Amadeus couldn’t count all of them. His heartbeat quickened as he realised that Blue was giving him a test, to work his magic and see how these creatures respond.

He licked his lips nervously, glancing at his parents. Lucas gave him a nod, and Varia smiled reassuringly.

Blue looked him over. “You don’t have an instrument?” the Fae asked, addressing Amadeus for once instead of his parents.

Amadeus shook his head. “My magic doesn’t need instruments… Instruments that I have to bring along, that is.”

Blue nodded in affirmation, curiosity filling her gaze, as she walked to stand with Amadeus’s parents.

Well, here goes nothing, Amadeus thought to himself as he started chanting, seeing the threads of magic, magic that only he could see. He chanted faster and faster, the threads glowing brighter and brighter. He reached out to the glowing threads and played them like he would with a violin.

When the tunes of his song faded away, Amadeus was stunned to see all the familiars crowding past the fence and sitting around and on him, their eyes filled with emotion. They seemed disappointed that the music ended, and they all slowly headed back to the menagerie as Blue, Lucas and Varia approached.

“That was stunning,” Varia gushed. “I never knew my little boy could be so powerful and influential!” Even Lucas seemed to inflate with a father’s pride.

Blue directed them back to the room, and there they waited while Blue discussed the results of the menagerie experiment with other scholars in the same field. Amadeus’s parents never stopped praising him, but he was more anxious to know the results from Blue.

Finally, the Fae came in, glasses perched on her nose and a clipboard clutched in her claws. Her eyes were shining with excitement.

“We’ve realised that Amadeus’s magic is not using magic to play instruments, not physical instruments at least.”

Blue leaned closer.

“Amadeus plays heartstrings.”

Amadeus heaved out a dramatic sigh. No matter how much he strained to conjure up and control the threads of magic woven around him, he could barely see them flickering in the corners of his vision, let alone grasp the strings and achieve any sort of task. Could he hear bells chiming, or was that his exhausted imagination playing tricks?

Eventually, when dripping candle wax had hardened on the cool stones and the evening’s last dregs of sunlight were spilling like fire through the circular windows, he closed the tome he’d been reading from. His claws scraped the floor as he made his way downstairs.

Nobody greeted him as he came to the door, but when he stepped outside he saw that his mother lay curled on a rock, watching the sunset.

She turned her bright gaze towards him. “Amadeus! Everything alright?”

He smiled weakly and nodded, but moments later, a pair of young skydancers emerged from behind a heap of boulders. He backed away instinctively. Their faces did not look friendly, and upon noticing him, they shepherded him out of sight, flaring their wings menacingly—his mother had already turned away.

“So you’re the freaky prodigy that got to visit the Observatory,” they sneered. “Go on, show us your special magic.” Their words were laced with thinly veiled jealousy.

“I’d rather not,” Amadeus stuttered. He attempted to edge away from his tormentors, aiming for the treeline just up the slope ahead of him.

“Too scared? Or a fake?”

“No—no, really. Just—no.”

“Suit yourself. But don’t try anything.” The skydancers turned away contemptuously, aiming to leave as quickly as they’d come. So perhaps it was fear, not jealousy, that motivated them. Seemed like a funny way to go about it, though.

“Yes, okay,” Amadeus blindly agreed before retreating into the darkness of the woods. Birdsong and other miscellaneous chirps and croaks seemed to close around him like a tangible force, drowning his senses. Instead of discomfort, however, Amadeus felt his muscles loosen and calm settle on his mind. The skydancers’ harsh tone was already fading from his mind—it wasn’t as if it hadn’t happened before.

You’re a smart young dragon, his father’s voice layered over the bustling soundscape inside his head. Use that brain of yours!

Amadeus felt a brief spark of affection for his parents but pointedly ignored this and instead let the music of the Starfall Isles wash over him. No thoughts, no words, just meaningless sounds that bounced off one another and rang in his ears while he wandered through the forest. Stars were yet to appear in the sky above him, but pale, luminescent blossoms laced the branches of trees.

He’d only been walking for a few minutes when he realised he was not alone. Aside from wildlife, that is.

He came to an alarmed halt, panic threatening to take over, until a trio of hatchlings emerged from the undergrowth. Two faes and a guardian, who was the biggest of the three but clearly the youngest. She kept tripping over her own feet and a scrap of moss had caught on her horns.

Amadeus vaguely recognised them, but admittedly never bothered to learn their names. “It’s late,” he chided. “You shouldn’t be out here.”

The faes glanced at one another worriedly and the guardian looked guilty for half a second, but Amadeus’ tone was more reassuring than scolding.

“We’re playing hide and seek!” one fae squeaked. “Will you help us find Hurricane?”

Amadeus blinked, pretending not to understand. “You’re playing hide and seek with a hurricane?”

“No, I’m Tanzanite, and our friend is called Hurricane,” he giggled. “This is Ariel and Lilith.” He gestured to the guardian and the other fae respectively.

“Silly me! Why don’t I help you find Hurricane, then?” The three of them bounced off in different directions. And get you home to your parents, Amadeus added silently. Sunlight still filtered through the trees, but it wouldn’t be long before it disappeared entirely. He followed the closest hatchling, Ariel. Her clumsy strides sent unsuspecting creatures scattering and squawking into the trees, but it was only when Amadeus listened closer that he realised not all the screeching was birds.

“Up here! Help!” came the pitiful cries.

Ariel skidded to a halt, her eyes wide. “Hurricane! Where are you?”

Amadeus looked up slowly and was somewhat unsurprised, and concerned, to see a small green spiral in the branches above them.

Hurricane had attempted to balance between boughs of two trees, and in doing so sent one of them crashing to the ground. Now he clutched frantically at a thin branch, several feet away from where he’d started. The tree he’d climbed originally was old and twisted, with plenty of footholds, but Amadeus doubted the hatchling’s tiny claws would be able to grip the smooth bark of this one.

It took a moment for panic to set in. Arcanist help me, how in the world am I supposed to get him down?

“Can you use your wings?” Amadeus called, fighting to keep his voice even.
Hurricane fluttered his wings, but shook his head. Upon closer inspection he was even younger than Amadeus thought; the spiral had only just had a growth spurt and there was no way he’d be able to lift his whole body.

"Don't move," Amadeus said, as if it wasn't clear already. Hurricane shifted uncomfortably and tightened his grip.

Ariel stared hopefully, waiting for him to do something.

Inhaling deeply, Amadeus desperately tried to summon something, anything, that would help him. He forced himself to relax. As his heart rate slowed, threads glimmered in the air around him. Magic is nature's gift to us, his father once said. But for all his research and his parents insistence that he be the best he could, he was clueless as to what he could do here.

Amadeus was ready to sink into the leaves and give up, let Hurricane fall and meet his fate - how serious the injuries would be, he had no idea, but it wouldn't be pretty. Then it happened. The trees shook, bark flaking, a rumbling sound emanating from the earth itself. Their branches seemed to reach out, sprouting new leaves while old ones fluttered to the ground and crumbled away. It was then that Amadeus realised he had to take control. He reached out, bending the strings, plucking them with sharp twanging sounds. The trees interlocked, twisted around one another, fighting for sunlight and air that didn’t even exist yet.

Years and years, half a dragon's lifespan perhaps, sped by in a moment, while an electric haze crackled around the three dragons, tinted purple, barely visible as the sunlight vanished. Ariel flung herself to the ground. Hurricane clutched his branch, awestruck and panicked at the same time.

Amadeus reached out with his magic one last time and then it fell suspiciously silent. Birdsong resumed as if nothing had happened. Confidently, albeit wearing a rather shell-shocked expression, Hurricane crept down the trunk, slotting his feet into knots the tree had buckled itself into and winding his tail around new branches.

Startled by the commotion, Tanzanite and Lilith came running, surprised to see Hurricane.
“Where were you hiding?” they protested. “We couldn’t find you anywhere!”

While they expressed their outrage punctuated with snorts of laughter, Amadeus muttered absent-mindedly, “I’m not useless.” The others looked at him strangely but Hurricane and Ariel beamed at him.

“No, you’re amazing! Can you teach us how to do that?”
