Biography
Yselda The Cartographer |
A map is the greatest of all epic poems. Its lines and colors show the realization of great dreams.
- Gilbert H. Grosvenor A land is born from brush strokes; thick and thin, long and short. Words echo from the one who taught you to see the world in a new light: paint the land. From the ashes you rose, embers and darkness carried away on a fresh breeze. And oh, what joy filled you! What freedom! You feel alive as worlds unfurl with each new mark on parchment. A singing through your veins, and one day you find someone to share your song. You create mountains and valleys, oceans and forests. You create, and in doing so give the gift of knowledge to others. You paint the land. Lore by Pressia 68967 |

"Leave the mapmaking to the Wind dragons."

“Yselda!” The call comes from behind. Yselda suppresses a sigh and turns from her parchment to see her mother standing there, looking angrily down at her. “Yselda!” she barks again. Her jewelry shines in the light of the Annex’s lava, casting dim shadows on her feathers. Between that and the flaming kilt at her waist, she gives off the aura of a true blacksmith. Yselda gives up on suppressing her sigh. “Yes, mother?” Hetha scoffs and casts her gaze upon Yselda’s parchment. “What are you doing?” “I’m trying to map out the Blacksand Annex. Did you know that because of the lava flow, it’s never been pinpointed well enough to create an accurate-“ “Yselda.” Hetha’s voice is sharp, cutting off Yselda’s ramblings with fierce precision. “I’ve told you before and I’ll tell you again: There is no need for maps in this part of the world. Not here in the Annex, not in the rest of the Waste. Now, leave your paper and come for your lessons. It is time for you to learn swordsmithing.” She turns her back. “Leave the mapmaking to the Wind dragons.” |
"I don’t abandon my maps."
Yselda doesn’t abandon her maps. She comes back to them daily, in between her smithing lessons. Hetha doesn’t approve, of course, but there’s not much she can do about it aside from throwing her parchment into the lava. She knows that Yselda would only buy more parchment, and the entire cycle would continue. Yselda’s father, Kimros, is more understanding. He is less of a blacksmith than his mate, preferring to dabble in the arts of Fire magic. “You know,” he says to her one day, while Hetha is demonstrating a sword’s agility to a potential customer. “Once you’re old enough, you can leave, go to Wind. Perhaps they’ll teach you the art of mapmaking.” Yselda smiles and doesn’t say that she has already planned just that. |

Cartographer ● |
It is a dark day when Yselda leaves her home in the Annex behind, the sky black with soot. Her mother scoffs and turns her back on her daughter, muttering. Kimros and Yselda’s siblings wave at her as she sets off northwest, toward Wind. The Windswept Plateau is nothing like Yselda’s ever seen before. The sky is bright instead of darkened by ash, and clouds blow in a gentle breeze. She feels more at home than ever. She makes her way to the Reedcliff Ascent, where she meets a mapmaker – no, a cartographer by the name of Jasmine. “Cartography is an art,” Jasmine tells her as they spread out their maps together underneath the bamboo reeds, held steady in the breeze by small rocks. “You must see the land for what it is: A scene waiting to be painted.” Yselda blossoms under Jasmine’s tutelage, and soon enough she becomes a cartographer in her own right. |
"I am instantly smitten."
Yselda says goodbye to Jasmine one bright sunny day, her feathers stirring in the gentle breeze. “Remember!” Jasmine calls as Yselda takes off. “Paint the land!” Yselda travels northwest once more, to the ever-shifting Starfall Isles. It is while she’s mapping out a section of the Starwood Strand that she comes across an Ice dragon with bright fans tied to their wings. “What are you doing?” the nocturne asks, gazing at her paper. Yselda looks up. “I’m mapping this area of the Strand out,” she replies. “It’s never really been mapped out before. Probably because of its hidden dangers.” The other dragon blinks. Ah, a newcomer then. Yselda smiles and holds out a claw. “My name is Yselda. What’s yours?” “Isoda,” the nocturne says shyly. “And before you ask, I am in fact female.” She tilts her head. “Mapping, you said? How do you learn?” Yselda is instantly smitten. |

Clan ● |
Isoda blossoms under Yselda’s teaching, just as Yselda herself had. Together they travel across Sornieth, mapping out the land and exchanging tales from their travels. It’s not long before the two of them become mates. They’re back in the Starfall Isles one day when they come across a small clan. Spyrefalls, it’s called. The Guard Captain looks at them with slight distrust, but the leader, Beowyr, assures them it’s nothing. “She’s just doing her job,” he says to them as he leads them to the guest quarters, a large spire located near the canteen. “Has to make sure we don’t get attacked by anyone with untoward intentions, you see. She’ll warm up to you soon enough.” The pair stays longer than they had expected, and after about a week they come to a unanimous decision: They’re staying. Maelrys, the clan’s historian, grins when she hears this. “You can travel with me, if you’d like!” she says. “You’ll be able to map out the areas to ruins, so that I or other dragons can revisit them.” It’s a good decision. |

"This isn’t the first time I've left a home, and I know of a set of ruins deep in the forest near the Hewn City. "
| ________ |
Yselda, Isoda and Maelrys have just gotten back from a mapping expedition when the clan is attacked by alien creatures and forced from their home. The clan becomes weary, downtrodden, like they’ll never have a home again now that the Spyre Falls are lost. But Yselda remains optimistic. This isn’t the first time she’s left a home, and she knows of a set of ruins deep in the forest near the Hewn City. There are streams all around, with a pond at the center. It will make a good home. |
