Alcyone The Diplomat

After allowing Flashflame to return to her lair, you head off into the Platforms again, spying a beautiful island that calls to you. The island is almost entirely water, the only land a sandbar circling the back half of the island. Crystalline blue water pours in waterfalls over the sides of the isle, but the pool itself does not seem to be emptying. In fact, as you peer over the edge, you realize the falling water simply disappears halfway down the sky. Before you have a chance to truly investigate the inner workings of this magic, the pool begins to bubble and churn. Caution calls you to step back, and moments later a large dragon bursts from the depths, wings flaring. You say dragon as this creature resembles that of a Guardian, though their horns are knotted and branched in strange manners and their scales are thicker, some of them spined. Her tail forks at the end, and her wings fold against her spine grotesquely.

Alcyone was hatched from a lonesome arcane egg, lost in the waters of the Crystalspine Reach. Settled in the silt below, Alcyone’s egg slowly mutated as the magic swarmed around her. She was discovered by an arcanic researcher who brought her egg to his lab to study, hoping to discover the effects of the unintentional nesting location. When Alcyone hatched, the effects became clear. The crisp, powerful lines of her developing Guardian body had morphed to something unnatural, her horns now doubled and gnarled, scales thicker and spined. Her tail had split and became twins midway down, and her wings had far too many joints, making them gangly and grotesque. Yet, she was fit of mind and body.
After the researcher had gleaned all he could from her, they sent her on her way. Despite having no knowledge of her birth clan, Alcyone felt a strong calling to the magical arts taught by the Arcane flight, and quickly found herself accepted into a nearby mage's guild to apprentice. There, she learned many tricks of the trade and began to develop her magical skills, which appropriately revealed themselves to be water related. She was able to bend water through air, transform it from one stage of matter to another, and pull it from the earth. Alcyone was a dutiful student, learning what she could until she could learn no more. When that time came, the mutated dragon knew she needed to leave, to find somewhere to flourish. With that in mind, Alcyone set off, hunting for a new clan and a Charge. |

Eventually, Alcyone’s wanderings brought her to the sands of the Shifting Expanse, which felt strange under her feet but familiar in her heart. Even with her arcanic upbringing, Alcyone couldn’t help but admire the landscape and all it’s grit. Plants refused to die despite dry lands, animals finding their niche in the landscape while dragons bent it to their will. Though she was no science minded dragon, she could see the importance of it, despite the feud between Lightning and Arcane. It was that open-mindedness that landed Alcyone among the Galestorm Flyers, who shared her outlook to an extent. They welcomed the mage to their ranks, gained her magical help in securing their lair only to discover she was actually quite skilled in diplomatic matters. She joined forces with Amemasu, who quickly became her wife, and worked as a diplomat for the Flyers, balancing opposing viewpoints with ease.
When the Flyers underwent their move to Wind, Alcyone found herself incredibly busy. She had to take on diplomatic duties within the clan, as many of her clanmates had various gripes about the move that would easily turn to full blown fights if left to fester. However, after the move itself, Alcyone has found herself quite content in the new landscape. The open skies are refreshing, the lack of battle in nature a positive influence on many tempers, and most importantly, it was a fresh start. Alcyone was more than content to build a new home with Amemasu once again, this time untainted by the Dark Queen and her diciples. Her duties have not lessened, as the clan still requires her diplomacy among other clans, particularly with the influx in travelers. |

Alcyone is a kind and social creature by nature, docile and rational despite her looks. Despite this, Alcyone is by no means a push-over--a fact that she uses to her advantage when working in her job as a diplomat. She does not easily fall for tricks of the trade nor does she bend to others’ wills easily. Alcyone prefers to solve problems with words and logic over battles, which has always served her well as a diplomat.
Some find Alcyone to be too stubborn, headstrong and unrelenting in her goals. Though this serves her well when trying to navigate tenuous relations with other demanding clans, among clanmates it has earned her a reputation for inflexibility. She may make concessions and reach agreements, but there is often a certain level of annoyance at her constant need to have her way in some manner. As a result, her relations with clanmates can be strained, though few are entirely broken. |

Alcyone is not entirely without close friends, despite struggles in relationships. In fact, she and Nantis have reached a mutual understanding friendship built upon the fact that she is as stubborn as she is. Beginning as a working relationship between a King and his diplomat, it turned into an understanding that bending to what is easy is not always the best course of action, particularly in regards to Elspeth’s own headstrong nature. The two are not particularly close, but have never hesitated to call each other friends. It is Mourn who Alcyone views as her closest friend, a dragon with a similarly mutated body but much more tragic past. Though it took months upon months of careful walking and talking, Alcyone has managed to coax Mourn into her social circle and offer her insight as to dealing with her appearances. The two do not work well together professionally, but are quite close when off-duty. The one dragon who has truly captured all of Alcyone’s heart would be Amemasu, another mutated dragon born of magic, or rather reborn. Amemasu’s whimsy and flair for dramatics is what first caught Alcyone’s attention, gaining her a partner and friend to work with. This quickly turned to a romance when Alcyone found herself truly listening to Amemasu, learning to understand the priestess’ rambling thoughts and worshipping patterns. The two are like minded, understanding that there are two sides to every coin and one must look at both to understand the stakes.
