Two Stories

My name is Týr.

It's snowing less than usual today. Yesterday, it was more. I don't know what that means. I haven't asked anyone about it yet.

Soon, it won't be snowing at all. The elders spoke of it — that we will retreat into the caves. I've never been there. I'm a little scared. I haven't told that to anyone, either.

It will still be cold, of course. It's always cold here.

The elders never said "we", though. Not about themselves. Just us. Us being... well, me. Me and the others. Maybe an adult or two to keep watch. I don't know. I don't know anything yet.

But I think they're going out to fight.

We've never had to fight. Not here, at least. Our Father — I don't know of any others — protects these lands, with great spikes of ice and snowstorms. And us, if anything gets through. It doesn't happen a lot.

When it happens, though, they always want me to be there. I don't like it a lot.

"Tell us," they say, "is this trespasser guilty?"

They want me to say yes. I have to say yes, because trespassers are always guilty. That's what I need to say.

"And what kind of punishment do they deserve?"

I don't like this part.

After a while, they stopped asking me. I still don't know what happens. I don't think they die. But I don't think it's very nice, either.

Yesterday, they asked me to come again. Someone was caught stealing food, and I had to say what I thought. I had to think one of two words, 'innocent' or 'guilty'. Nothing else.

They don't need to keep me blindfolded like the others, since I can't really see anything without one, either. The others say that's why they like me better.

But sometimes, things slip through.

Voices, for one. No one is allowed to talk; especially not them. Just me, and one of the elders. They only want to hear justice. Nothing else. But I know it was Erlië, who yelled before they stopped him.

I had to say he was guilty.

Later, one of the elders came to me. She asked me if I didn't want to say that. I didn't answer her. I should have.

She said it was something very important they were making me do. I was the only one who could do it fairly, she said. I was the only one. Even if I didn't want to.

I have to.

They say our Father is happy when we do this. Is he? I've never met him. If I try hard enough, I might. Some of us — his children — stay closer to him than the rest of us. I think they called it an honor.

I don't know.

I don't know. I still have to.

I don't know what happened to Erlië. I haven't heard him at all, today. I hope he's okay. I said he was guilty. Did I mean it, or not? I don't...

My name is Týr.

I'm sitting in the snow. It's soft. It's cold, too, but everything here is. It's white, they say. Like my fur, they say.

And I'm going to miss the snow.

One last time. One last time sitting here, digging around, having fun.

I'm scared.

My name is Týr.

The elders told me to remember as much as I could. To repeat it, in case something goes wrong. What kinds of things? It scares me. I shouldn't be scared.

My name is Týr.

I have to be just, and fair. Just and fair. They want to hear justice. I have to give it to them.

They're rounding all of us up, now. It's time to leave, to head into the ice caves. I shouldn't be scared.

Guilty, innocent. Is Erlië coming, too?

Guilty, innocent, just, fair. They want justice. I hear my name called, and someone holding my back; do I have to go?

We're going to be living in the ice caves, for as long as we have to. They didn't tell us how long. No choice, though. Guilty, innocent. I had to say 'guilty'.

They're leading me down, now. The floor feels rough. Not soft.

It's colder in here.

It's... so much colder.

...I'm cold.

I'm awake.

It's warm. Where am I?

I can't see; can I ask? I can't remember much.
I try to think.

Guilty. Innocent.

Right.

I am Justice.

The first thing I hear is a sharp ringing; then, voices. Voices far from what I can recognize. Higher voices, lower voices. Unfamiliar voices.

I don't dare to speak yet.

I move a paw, slightly. It doesn't hurt, but it's hard. The fur on it feels heavy, and wet. But I don't think it's heavy because it's wet. It's just heavy.

Just heavy, just hard. The voices are louder now. I think they're here.

I don't know what they're saying, the first time I focus on them. The second time is easier. Then, one close voice:

"You're awake?"

It's a loud voice. No, not loud — large. I blink my eyes a few times, slowly, but I still don't say anything.

Something covers my body. It feels like a paw, but less soft. And warmer. Larger.

This is not someone like me.

"It's alright," the voice continues. "You're safe. I'm the only one here."

I try to say something.

Maybe it was an "alright" or "thank you"; now it's something in between a growl and a cough. It sounds bad.

"Oh, um..."

The voice doesn't know what to say, either. Definitely bad. I try again.

"I.."

One letter. I don't think thats enough, either. The paw moves a little.

"H-hello. Um..."

"Oh! Good, you can still speak. Well, hi there! My name is Blake. Can you tell me yours?"

Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake. I repeat it a few times in my head. I've never heard a name like that.

"I'm... I'm..."

Why is it so hard to say the right words?

"I'm Justice."

"Justice? That's a nice name."

I can't see it, but it sounds like she would be smiling while saying that. I don't respond. Instead, I try to stand up — immediately to stumble and fall down again.

I think it's Blake who catches me, if she was honest about being the only one here. And if it is her, she really must be much, much larger than me.

"I want to... know..." My voice sounds creaky, almost. "Where am I?"

She sets me down, back where I was before.

"Well, our clan doesn't have much of a name, but... These are the western Sunbeam Ruins. The Lightweaver's land, but close to her sister's."

Light...weaver?

What a strange name. It reminds me of our Father's name.

...Where is he, anyways?

"Where is..." Again, I can't find the right words. "Where is... home?"

It takes a moment for her to react.

"I don't know if I can tell you that." She pauses again. "See, I don't really know. I'm sorry."

I slowly nod.

"But, um...! Well, I found you in the Southern Icefield. A few others and I were doing research, between the Crags and the Fortress. We found you there, um," her voice is getting quieter, "frozen. We, we didn't see any other Gaolers — then again, we didn't know you were in there at first, either."

It takes a moment for me to think about what she says; there's too many words for me to follow. Strange, unfamiliar words. I try to repeat one of them.

"Ga-Gaol..."

"Gaolers, yeah. It's, it's what they call dragons like you."

Like me?

"Most don't believe they exist. Anymore, that is. What's it they called them..? "The Icewarden's first children." I think that was it."

First children?

No, that doesn't sound right. We're our Father's children, not the first. Just his children.

So what happened to the others?

"I suppose you could say I'm one of the Lightweaver's first children, then. But I was born down in the Icefield, too."

She returns her paw to cover me. It feels warm, still. Not cold.

"I don't think we can return, though. It's too dangerous for you. I'm sorry, Justice."

Her voice is sad, now. I don't want to say anything. I don't know what I'd say.

"You can stay here with me, though, if you want."

I don't know why, but — I nod.

She grabs me again, this time holding me tightly against her. Then, at last, she lets me go, setting me on the ground in a different place from where I was before.

Somewhere different. I hear a door creak.

"Let's get you a place to sleep, then."

I nod.
