Zaran

Zaran doesn't know where she came from. All she knows of the beginning of her life is wind, sky, and the rusted gold of desert stone reaching for the horizon. After that, she knows a happy childhood under the care of her adopted mom, Sovys. From a young age, Zaran was lively and driven. She'd try to corral ember mice, construct elaborate castles out of clay, make plans for world domination, etc. You know, the normal childhood activities. As she grew older, her aimless energy took shape and she thought about creating a clan of her own. Through her whole life she was supported by her mom in anything she may do, but of this one idea Sovys disapproved. Zaran never knew why. She'd visited distant cities with her mom when they'd had to buy supplies and loved the color, motion, and life contained in them. She wished she could live in that environment and couldn't fathom why Sovys chose isolation.

As she was nearing adulthood, her family grew to include a strange spirit that had come from below the ground. Zaran and Deyin did not become friends immediately, but when the friendship took root it grew fast and strong. With him she further developed her desire to create a clan, and so they joined forces to do so. In the end, Sovys saw she could not dissuade her daughter from this path and so decided to support the endeavor and give all the advice she could give to make the process go as smooth as possible. The clan started out with a dozen wayward souls and has since grown to have government, structure, and hundreds of dragons.

Zaran and Deyin had been together for a long time, but eventually realized their relationship was meant to, in the end, be platonic. They remain fiercely loving of and loyal to each other. Zaran had several lovers after Deyin, and from one of those relationships she got her daughter Inia.

After many years of running the clan, overcoming hardships and keeping everything together, Zaran grew tired. She handed control over to her daughter and traded her responsibilities for a museum. Nowadays, she collects things to preserve and keep in her multimedia documentation of the clan's history, keeping anything from strains of plants to crumbled artwork to trade accounts.
Sometimes, she still dreams of flight unburdened by a physical body, drifting as a petal on the wind.
