Biography

Forty-five seconds, that was all I had.

That was fine: it was all I needed.

I entered the enormous, lavish library. A receptionist looked up at me, I could feel an inquiring vibe radiating from him. His crest flared at a tilt—a Fae’s way of expressing his curiosity, I assumed.

“Can I help you?” he asked, unease simmering under his blank facade. He didn't recognize me, won't recognize me.

This was his clan, not mine. I didn't have one, never had been to his clan before, but he'd told me where it was. Described it so clearly my steps didn't falter as I took a right, past the receptionist desk and the alarmed receptionist behind it.

“E-excuse me! This is a private collection,” he sputtered, flusteredly hopping over his desk and fluttering after me. “You're not allowed in here without the chief's written consent!”

I smiled pityingly, his worry and indecision making my antennae tingle. Poor, little Fae. Me coming during your shift was deliberate, you know.

“Go on,” I said, finally responding, yet not pausing my stride in the slightest, “call the guards—I've come for what's mine.”

The Fae bolted, jagged blades of urgency fading as he flew farther and farther from my range.

Inhale, exhale. Muscles tensing as wings tuck close. The countdown had begun; I raced to beat it.

Forty-five, forty-four…

Yesterday I'd caused a “false alarm.” It had taken them fifty seconds—I expected a quicker response, as this time it was more than a shadowy figure in the corner of his eye.

Forty, thirty-nine…

Not even a minute to get what I came for and get out, but it was enough—it had to be; I wasn't leaving without it.

Thirty-five, thirty-four…

I'd finally hit the wall. With a quick turn and a dozen rapid steps, I stumbled to a halt. This was it. He'd said the far corner from the windows, the one draped in shadow.

Thirty, twenty-nine…

I wedged my hand in between the shelf and the wall, hand knocking roughly against something before I pulled it out: a black leather-bound book.

Twenty-seven, twenty-six…

I whirled and began the dash back the way I came.

Twenty-five, twenty-four…

I passed the desk and took a right. Not far now, I was so close.

Nineteen, eighteen…

Down a hallway and a left, then a sharp right. Straight through or another right? I hesitated.

Fourteen, thirteen…

No time to doubt myself. I went straight. Please, let this be the right way.

Eight, seven…

I bursted out and was blinded by sunlight. My steps faltered for a beat before I regained my bearings and launched myself into the sky, flying for all my Skydancer genetics were worth.

Five, four…

If I can just reach the treeline.

Two, one…

Almost there.

Zero.

An ear-splitting roar split the air, and my whole body seemed to throb with the rage and heartbreak of it. I couldn’t help but turn my head around to look.

A Guardian rose into the air behind me, eyes pinned on my retreating form. Her wing beats were frantic, but I could feel the hopelessness in her heart from here.

I'd taken something that was hers to protect, and she knew as well as I that it was too late, she'd failed. Size and speed would do little for her now.

I'd crossed into the trees, nearly crashing into a pine I'd not noticed with my focus behind me as it had been. Weaving around it I flew on, effortlessly avoiding trunks and branches as I sunk deeper under their cover.

Despite the second-hand despair hanging low over me, dragging my wings down with its weight, joy swelled in my heart.

I'd done it.

Forty-five seconds was all I had needed to get a peice of him back.

Dearest Rosemary, if you're found my journal, it means I'm gone.

I wish you my sincerest condolences (though you've known how I've always thought of my self), and all my love

My vision blurred, sorrow and pain clouding it. I couldn't read a single word more; I swiped at my eyes.

A tear smudged my name, tainting his beautiful calligraphy.
