Pel
Carer

Pel was the youngest of his clutch, coming from a long line of siblings his parents had raised, destined to serve the Arcanist. However, he was born pale and sickly, his stubby legs barely strong enough to carry him out of his eggshell. He grew up under his parents' wings, needing constant care to be kept alive. While his siblings learned and trained, his sickness only got worse. His parents enlisted the healers from all over Sornieth to try to make him better. This was how he met Fiona, the blind daughter of a visiting cleric, with a halo of insects, and blossoms growing out of her eyes.

They quickly became friends, and Pel began to look forward to her visits to his room. She would bring him flowers and bugs to keep him company, and explain how to listen for the distinctive cries of all the different birds outside his window. However, Pel became better under her father's care, and as soon as his parents had bought the medicine, both Fiona and her father left. As he recovered his strength, his parents had time to lay more nests. He offered to look after the new hatchlings as a favour, and the children grew to adore him.

Soon, every couple in the clan gave him their hatchlings to take care of, and he settled into the role of carer. He loved spending time with the children, and his room quickly became adorned with the various gifts and drawings they'd made him. He also became close friends with Saalzarell, one of Eris' eldest children, and a talented tattoo artist. Sie helped him commemorate each hatchling that went through his care by added to the curling golden tattoos across his shoulders.

After he'd spent years taking care of hatchlings, an unexpected visitor returned to him. Fiona stumbled to their door, cloaked in fireflies and glittering with frost. She was shaking violently, and could barely move without collapsing. He quickly took her into his care, and helped the clan's healers as much as he could. Bit by bit, she got better, but the shards of ice in her wings never really left her. She settled down with Pel, their friendship revived along with the flowers in her eyes. Soon, their relationship developed as they became surrogate parents to dozens of hatchlings. After some time, they even had children of their own.

They work together now, looking after every child that's born in the clan. Pel tends to be better at looking after them, but Fiona's captivating magic and deep empathy makes her an integral part of the process.
