"The ancient spirit of a Pearlcatcher who managed to use its etherial pearl as a conduit of magic and with it ensnare roaming and hungry spirits. They formed a pack and hunt as such and use tricks to ambush their prey and feed on its magic and essence."

The sudden scream startled Sentinel.
She got up from where she was sitting, trying not to look at the terrified faces of her guests. The Gaoler stood, motionless, staring at the closed door of her wooden cabin, listening. There was nothing... absolutely no sounds... no wind, no nocturne creatures, just the crackling of the fire burning in the fireplace and the normal sounds an old wooden house would make.

"What was that Sentinel?"

She turned around to the merchant. The old Spiral and his two guards were the only connection she had with the outside world ever since she decided to seclude herself in the woods and take upon the mission to guard the old magic forest. The group would stop by a couple times a month with supplies and news. They'd usually stay the night and make her a bit of company, which she enjoyed (even though she would never admit it).

"Something's hunting us. This silence is..."

"Unnerving?"
, interrupted the merchant.

"Unnatural", finished Sentinel.

"We should go see who's in danger", said one of the guards, a veteran Mirror showing a number of scars on his body.

"No one's in danger", the Gaoler said "it's a trick. Whatever it is, it's trying to lure us out."

"You mean... the ghosts?"
, moaned the Spiral "I thought they couldn't leave the ancient ruins area."

"Normally they can't."
She turned her head towards the semi-open window. "But there's certain nights when the magic is stronger. And if the magic is stronger, so are the spirits. Stay here." She reached out for the lantern hanging on the wall and walked outside.

It was pitch black. No moon or stars in the sky. Just a thick and cold fog covering the ground, it's misty tentacles following every movement of the Gaoler. She could only see on a small circle around her, the lantern struggling to illuminate the darkness. Sentinel walked towards the edge of the clearing and closed her eyes to try to sense something. Nothing. Just a dread feeling that something was wrong.

"It seems that someone was really screaming for help...", a voice next to her made the Gaoler turn quickly. The three dragons were standing there, staring at the woods. The two guards were holding a lantern each and the merchant floated nervously behind them, trying not to look to the treeline.
Sentinel frowned and was about to tell them to go back inside when her eyes caught a glimpse of what they were looking at: gore was smeared all over the ground and a few bushes.

"It was a wolf", she said after examining the remains.

"A huge one at that!", said one of the guards "What could have done such a thing?"

"Back inside!"
, Sentinel urged them "It's a lure, it's trying to..."

An unnatural growling echoed in the darkness. Too close, all around them. A cold, chilling breath hit them in the back as they were frantically waving their lanterns around, trying to throw light on something that wasn't really there. Suddenly it all stopped and the silence was back.

"What was that?! Is it gone?"

As if to answer the merchant's question, glowing eyes started to appear in the darkness, all around them, staring... waiting...

"No", said Sentinel "the hunt just started."
She raised her lantern and made it glow brighter. "Stay close to me."
