"My love, they are all warrior's blood. They have the dirge inside them. They will grow strong and make their mother proud." Capse was uncertain, his sparkling starry hide glinted under the moonlight, the rocking of their ship on the Sea's waters which he usually found calming left him instead restless. "That one has no mother," his mate swore, turning her back to her children and her mate; so Capse could not see the tears that formed in Aleta's eyes. She had always felt she had to be two-times louder and perform two-times better to make up for her diluted heritage. This was one more assurance that she could never live up to her potential - and neither would she suffer her children to endure what she did. The shame. The anger. The doubt. Capse nuzzled their children, and whispered praises to each of them. He curled up in their nest with them, his beautiful children, and wrapped himself around them. Soon they fell asleep. Aleta was swift and silent. She took the wasp-scaled daughter and bound her in a silken bag. The newborn sqwacked, afraid. Aleta looked at her mate and the two 'pure' children with mourning, and took flight with her duty in her clutches. She flew out over the Sea of a Thousand Currents, under the moonlight, to the deepest part of the water where she could see no land. She let the bag drop. Her heart broke. "I spare you, my child. Go back to the stars, where you belong." |
