Strange Gifts
Tenebrae, the dusk dancer, she who cries Mother's tears. In the days of her ancient species' long seclusion, Tenebrae and her swarm would leave their thorny nest each night as the stars began to appear. With the moon casting a spotlight in the forest clearing, the Veilspun would all flutter in the lunar glow, their shimming wings reflecting the patterns of the stars. Moving with the rhythm of the swaying trees, the delicate dragons would chant soft poetry and sweet songs, dedicated to the Wispwillow Grove and all who dwelt there. But this long-held tradition (and many others of the secretive ancient shadowlings) was to be forever disturbed after the events of the Bounty of the Elements, when the world shifted and everything in Sornieth changed. New powers were discovered, odd birth defects occurred, and long-forgotten breeds that were once thought of as the stuff of legend rose once more to take their place in the new age. These strange phenomena had not passed the Veilspun by, despite their deep withdrawal into the dark woods that no modern dragon had dared disturb before. They began to notice new species of beastclan in their domain, and heard whispers of other archaic breeds repopulating many different regions. The eyes and genes of some of their own kin spontaneously evolved, and hatchlings were born with weird and wonderful new features. Tenebrae was one of the first of her swarm to be born with primal eyes, which became known as 'shade tears', and were thought by many to be a blessing from the Shadowbringer. Behind closed doors though, some of the more superstitious Veilspun called it a curse, and distrusted anyone born with those strange, oily eyes. When more and more of their numbers began to show mutations, it became obvious that things could never go back to how they had been for all those peaceful years of solitude, so the Veilspun decided to take their first tentative steps into the world they had long left behind, and make their presence known. Venturing from the deep forests, Tenebrae - unused to being alone, and having left her swarm in the safety of the Grove where they had wished to remain - was determined to seek out a clan who had knowledge of primal eyesight and of the causes of the elemental shifts. Using her flight's natural skills of sneaking and hiding, she overheard many travellers on her journey, and eventually made the acquaintance of a chatty merchant tundra with ties to a clan in the Shifting Expanse. They were, gossiped the tundra, researching The Bounty of the Elements, and had several ancient species as members already. Invited to meet with The Lastsparks, Tenebrae accompanied her new friend back to the lair, and after long talks with the clan leader, she agreed to stay with them and swap news of their two very different worlds. Scholars were eager to learn of the reclusive Veilspun, and Tenebrae, polite but guarded, helped fill their lorebooks as best she could without giving too many of her kind's secrets away. Keen to learn more about her strange primal eyes, the dragon learned over time to trust her clanmates, and accept their customs, which were so strange to her sometimes. In return she danced for them in the moonlight, and her songs touched the hearts of those who were sensitive to such things, but even those with minds of science and metal can't help feeling moved at the little dragon's beautiful displays. |
