Few would hesitate to call blizzards such as these among the worst of the trials the wilds of Sornieth had to offer. As such, fewer still would allow themselves to be caught unprepared in the midst of their fury. What most would consider a death sentence, Yukine considered rather peaceful and the perfect chance for a bit of meditation. Perhaps it was the fact that the blizzard’s screaming gale fell, quite literally, on deaf ears. Or perhaps the blizzard’s ferocious beauty was only revealed to one such as he, able to remain calm in the epicenter of its wrath. The reason mattered little, he decided, standing still against the rushing winds, as if frozen solid by the chill in the air. Sharp eyes scanned the horizon before him, revealing sights further away than most could manage, despite the blindness the snow brought; another happenstance adaptation that pushed away from the danger of his otherwise precarious situation. This was where he was meant to be. The same could not be said for the one approaching him from further down the frozen expanse. Obscured by the fine snow in the air, only a vague shape could be made out at first. Had the wind blown in Yukine’s favor, he likely would have been able to distinguish the newcomer’s scent. As it were, patience would yield his answers as the stranger, having caught sight of Yukine as well, began to move closer. The newcomer continued to approach, and though they staggered against the frozen winds, his gait was unmistakably that of another Wildclaw. That knowledge alone was enough to strike up a spark of trepidation in Yukine. Wildclaws were known for their aggressive, territorial behaviors, and if this stranger was coming to stake their claim over the lands Yukine had wandered for years, there would be little he could do to stop them. He hoped that his fears were misplaced as he began to approach the other in turn. The other, Ban, as he would come to learn, did not meet him in a flurry of claws, but rather with words. As pointless as they may have been in retrospect, considering Yukine’s deafness, their presence was a relief nonetheless. Seeming to acknowledge a lapse in communication, Ban resorted to gestures; he offered a simple flick of the head, back towards the direction he came, turning and walking away shortly after, leaving the unmistakable invitation hanging in the frigid air. This one was cold too, Yukine mused, though in a way quite different than himself. Regardless, the offer still stood, a chance to take himself to safety before the blizzard took him to the Eleven. Despite the lack of true danger Yukine faced, he found himself following the other Wildclaw. There would always be another storm, but he would never be guaranteed an opportunity such as this again, and a frosty personality was something Yukine could appreciate. |
