Biography

The Crystal Nook

From Nookipedia, the lore encyclopedia

The Crystal Nook is a kingdom floating in the Hoverview Vale, where a giant sky island houses its capital, New Nook City. A crystal refracting all eleven flight colors is the symbol of the city, reflecting the clan's pride in its diverse population. The kingdom is home to those who covet freedom and enjoy the foundational Arcane values of pursuing one's own dreams – a privileged right resulting from a revolution.

History

Aura

The clan's lore is defined by the concept of Aura, which is different to the ancient and natural magic that all dragons possess, but Aura can be used to further enhance magic. Aura is an invisible life energy that ranges from weak to powerful, and gives you a striking feeling of what a dragon is all about. A merciless and powerful dragon’s strong Aura will tell you to be cautious and afraid, while a kinder dragon's passive Aura will give you a warm feeling. Aura is rare, and not all dragons are born with it. Dragons born with Aura from other clans will always search for the mass congregation of Aura – located at the Crystal Nook. The Aura of non-Arcane dragons from other lands will allow them to live inside the radioactive landscape without getting sick. Aura is commonly believed to be an experiment imbued in select dragons from the deities, while some believe it's a new trait of evolution – though its true purpose and potential is unknown and is currently researched by scholar dragons. Aura is one of the most important things in the clan, and is instrumental in understanding citizens' personalities, determining their potential, and guiding them towards making a living from their passions. Aura is always capitalized.

Initial Founding

The Crystal Nook was founded by the progenitors Arjibi and Hydra, and was named after the chosen lair location, which was a nook in a mountain of the Crystalspine Reaches. Over the first few years, the nook was manually carved into a cave system large enough for sizeable imperials to navigate, and had numerous coves, or rooms, for every member to live in. While living in the caves, there was a ranking system with top ranked dragons living closer to the cave mouth or having a direct path to it, while lowest ranked dragons lived deep in the cave, who may never have gotten to leave.

The clan has always been a monarchy led by a queen and king, though originally a matriarchy, it shifted to a patriarchy when power unfavorably changed hands. Arjibi and Hydra originally held power for mere months, before their naivety and carelessness allowed them to be ousted.

The Queen & The King

The Revolution & Bounty of the Elements

A series of missteps allowed a foreign king to seize the lair, who ruled by fear through his Aura for years, and brought the clan to the brink of collapse. The ranking system was greatly utilized by the false king, who forced the progenitors to live in the depths. The most lengthy lore possessed by clan members detail this time period, and the revolution that took place as a result, from different perspectives of those involved.

During the Bounty of the Elements, the Crystalspine Reaches suddenly grew in height, sending earthquakes all over the Starfall Isles. The Crystal Nook, living inside of one of the pink crystalline mountains, was violently disturbed by the event, with many dragons sustaining injuries. The cave system grew twisted and warped, creating a confusing maze of dead-ends and corridors that were once much shorter. Visitors and new clan members are advised not to wander alone, or they shall risk becoming hopelessly lost. Unbeknownst to the clan, being largely cut-off from news of world events, the increased magical surge to the elements was instrumental in the progenitors reclamation of the throne merely months later.

Renaissance & Reformation

The rejuvenation of the progenitors was brought on by a group of rebels, who led a dramatic revolution which saw the false monarchy's exaltation, and the restoration of the throne to Arjibi and Hydra. The return of the benevolent leaders breathed life back into the clan, which entered a renaissance full of wealth and joy, remaining in that state at the present day.

Being blessed with a second chance to rule, provided by their own subjects, Arjibi and Hydra made a vow to give continuous repayment in the form of prioritizing the individual happiness of all clan members. A reformation began with great focus on such happiness, beginning with living conditions. They were concerned about the disturbance to their Crystalspine home during the Bounty of the Elements, and felt that the cave system no longer represented their growing civilization.

Immediately, a secret mission was underway to construct a new base location, and build a new capital city. A large floating island was scouted out and claimed, where New Nook City would come to be. After two years, the construction of the M.E.T.E.O.R.S. Center (Medicine, Education, Technology, Entertainment, Office, Research & Science) was complete and the grand opening for the new city was held. A large portion of the Nook's best and brightest were allocated to the island to work their professions.

As more and more individual homes continued to be built there, the progenitors abolished the cave ranking system and all focus shifted to the floating island. Soon, the citizens cultivated their new home and made it their own, abandoning the original cave system, which is currently protected as a heritage site, though it is subject to change.

Geography

The Crystal Nook's home is a giant sky island floating in the Hoverview Vale with a vast flat surface which contains the city. A series of walls encircle the city, which act as aqueducts, as water treatment takes place here, and a sprinkler system that sprays the farms which lie between each wall. The water is cultivated rainwater which runs down the sloped mountains flanking the walls, and is funneled into an interior lake and river which cuts through the city. When rainfall is excessive, a series of gates allow the river to flow off the side of the island and to the ocean below.

Within the walls, there are some small neighborhoods spread sparsely through the countryside. The heart of the city is near the center, with a dense population of dragons and buildings, commercial and residential. The lakeside castle is home to the Chalcedony Court, where royal affairs take place. However, rather than the royal family solely using the castle as a display of wealth, it is mostly used by the citizens, as this is where the M.E.T.E.O.R.S. Center is.

Directly outside the city walls are the aforementioned mountains reminiscent of the Crystalspine Reaches, a lagoon and swampy wetlands, a flat stretch of brown, packed ground serving as landing and takeoff for the clan's plane, and an elevated partial woodland made of Starwood Strand trees, where religious activities take place.

Art of the Crystal Nook's flying island. The underside of the island is made of rocks and dirt with large pink crystals on the bottom-most tips which keep the island aloft. The center of the island is a large swathe of grassland, surrounded by a circular walled structure. Within the wall is the city, rural neighborhoods, a lakeside castle, and a river cutting through the island. The end of the river flows through gates in the wall, where it pours off the side of the island. Tall pink mountains cradle the back of the island, with a sparkling rainbow between them. Also outside of the walls at different positions are a large flat rock, a forested wetland next to a lagoon, and an elevated platform with a runic circle surrounded by a semicircle of periwinkle trees. The island is surrounded by clouds, arcane runic symbols, and small bits of floating crystals. Through breaks in the clouds, the tips of the Crystalspine Reaches are visible, as well as the sea below.

Culture

Early life in the Crystal Nook was primitive, with the clan literally being cavemen of their world. With the evolution of magic and Aura, contact with other clans, and internal conflicts becoming more complex, the dragons grew to become more civilized. As a result of the renaissance, they have developed countless jobs, tools, structures, and more. The clan is now reminiscent to a fantasy medieval society and for much of their history, did not possess power or machines, but is currently exploding with an industrial revolution.

The dragons typically do not leave the Starfall Isles, and most do not leave New Nook City itself, as the city's farms and river allow for self-sustainability, and everything they require lies within the island. Most Arcane-born dragons in the clan have never seen another land, and the only dragons who leave are couriers, merchants, explorer-classes, diplomats, and gamemasters. From day to day, the clan members enjoy an easygoing life of freedom dedicated to pursuing their dreams and living out their passions.

Laws
While the kingdom places high value on personal freedoms, it is not a lawless land, and has an expectation of basic decency for those who live there. Ten foundational laws rule the kingdom and set in stone the rights of its citizens. The ten laws also apply to the monarchy, with specific rules outlining what it cannot do, and what it must do for its subjects. These laws were written as a result of the revolution and have guided the kingdom into a new era.

Naming

You may notice a secondary name accompanying the dragon's name in their bios. This is the dragon's surname, as determined by the clan's genealogist who traced each dragon's lineage to their paternal generation one ancestor. The dragon then inherits the name of that ancestor as a surname. We use paternal lineage in honor of the Father, the Arcanist. For dragons who are already generation one themselves, they are fabricated a surname based on their flight and the flight that their species originates from, using playful nicknames from those communities. For Bogsneaks who originate from no flight, use Baldwin. The exception to this rule in the clan are the surnames of the progenitors and their lineage, who all use the surname Nook.

Under the shield is a ribbon which says Nook. There is a decorative flourish in the blank spaces in between these elements. Inside of the shield is the black silhouette of a bipedal hibernal starbear holding a crystal refracting a rainbow onto itself.

Religion

The clan is fiercely loyal to the youngest god whose actions sparked dragonkind's existence, the Arcanist. Copies and murals of the Arcanist’s history, ideals and findings are often reproduced and scattered throughout the city, accompanied by the clan's pursuit of knowledge which mirrors the deity's. Closeness to the Arcanist is ever-sought, through spiritual communication and Exalting.

Exalting is considered a religious ceremony, led by an Exalt Expert, who assists dragons to achieve a higher plane of existence. Exalted dragons join the Arcanist to serve a higher cause, and the act is considered one of the most honorable things a dragon can do. Dragons born in the clan are usually the ones who are exalted, which is not the case for newly joined dragons from another clan.

Stance on Diversity
Though the clan is Arcane, diversity is beloved in the Crystal Nook. The concept of a monolair is disturbing here, whether its of one species, one flight, or one color scheme. The Kingdom's flag and family crest of the monarchy features imagery of a crystal refracting the colors of the eleven flights, to symbolize that all dragons of all flights are welcome and respected at the Crystal Nook. Members from other flights are allowed to pay tribute to their native deity so long as they do not disrespect the Arcanist, as every flight festival is celebrated and enjoyed, though the Starfall Celebration is done so with extra vigor. The Crystal Nook bolsters its Plague members, especially during Riot of Rot, due to prejudices against them throughout Sornieth.

Although the kingdom had once been lost to foreign rulers, non-Arcane dragons are still permitted in important jobs such as governmental councils, as the monarchy is experienced and optimistic. The clan is welcome to visitors and regularly provides to them lodging at Inns, rarely feeling threatened by those who possess no Aura.

Born on the 4 year anniversary of the clan's founding, Arcadia is adept at recording and maintaining the general information and significant historical events from the Crystal Nook: The Lore Hub. Her work was made possible by researching unorganized clues left by previous Keepers, interviewing residents, and working with other scholars. Since then, she's dedicated herself to her life's meticulous work.

Arcadia is a small, shy dragon who hides behind a large book. Though her job is one of the most important, she would rather have others pay more attention to her work and information about the Nook, than to her. This is partly due to her pride in her work, but partly because she feels that she, herself, is boring when compared to the storied histories of the older clan members.

Considering using a scatter for the first time on her, so...
